TL;DR: Two mild and metal-free methods for the preparation of two kinds of important benzothiazole derivatives, 2-acylbenzothiazoles and dialkyl Benzothiazol-2-ylphosphonates, respectively, were developed.
Abstract: Two mild and metal-free methods for the preparation of two kinds of important benzothiazole derivatives, 2-acylbenzothiazoles and dialkyl benzothiazol-2-ylphosphonates, respectively, were developed. The dialkyl H-phosphonate (RO)2P(O)H exists in equilibrium with its tautomer dialkyl phosphite (RO)2POH. TBHP triggered α-carbon-centered phosphite radical formation, whereas DTBP triggered phosphorus-centered phosphonate radical formation. The two types of radicals led respectively to two different reaction processes, the direct C2-acylation of benzothiazoles and C2-phosphonation of benzothiazoles.

TL;DR: The experimental results indicated that both the S doping and moderate degree of oxidization of GO can induce the formation and high dispersion of the ultrasmall Ru NPs with larger electrochemically active surface areas for exposing more active sites.
Abstract: Nanostructuring and metal-support interactions have been explored as effective methods to improve the electrocatalytic activity in heterogeneous catalysis. In this study, we have fabricated ultrasmall Ru nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed on S-doped graphene (denoted as Ru/S-rGO) by a facile "one-pot" procedure. The experimental results indicated that both the S doping and moderate degree of oxidization of GO can induce the formation and high dispersion of the ultrasmall Ru NPs with larger electrochemically active surface areas for exposing more active sites. Metal-support interaction between S-doped graphene and Ru NPs was observed from the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electronic charge-difference studies. It resulted in the decrease in the electron density of Ru, which facilitated electron release from H2O and H-OH bond breakage. The results of density functional theory calculation confirmed that the S-dopants could reduce the energy barrier for breaking the H-OH bond to accelerate water dissociation during the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). At a current density 20 mA cm-2, the lowest overpotential of 14 mV, superior to that of Pt/C in alkaline solution, was observed for Ru/S-rGO-24. The observed lowest value of overpotential was because of the ultrasmall size, high dispersion, and metal-support interaction. This work provides a simple and effective method in designing advanced electrocatalysts for the HER in an alkaline electrolyte.

TL;DR: The detection sensitivity and selectivity were much improved relative to a sensor based on the CA-CdTe QDs probe, which was prepared using a one-pot synthetic method.
Abstract: Cysteamine (CA)-capped CdTe quantum dots (QDs) (CA–CdTe QDs) were prepared by the reflux method and utilized as an efficient nano-sized fluorescent sensor to detect mercury (II) ions (Hg2+). Under optimum conditions, the fluorescence quenching effect of CA–CdTe QDs was linear at Hg2+ concentrations in the range of 6.0–450 nmol/L. The detection limit was calculated to be 4.0 nmol/L according to the 3σ IUPAC criteria. The influence of 10-fold Pb2+, Cu2+ and Ag+ on the determination of Hg2+ was < 7% (superior to other reports based on crude QDs). Furthermore, the detection sensitivity and selectivity were much improved relative to a sensor based on the CA–CdTe QDs probe, which was prepared using a one-pot synthetic method. This CA–CdTe QDs sensor system represents a new feasibility to improve the detection performance of a QDs sensor by changing the synthesis method. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: An aptamer based colorimetric assay for rapid and sensitive determination of zearalenone based on the inhibition of ZEN aptamer on the the peroxidase-like activity of gold nanoparticle (AuNPs).
Abstract: An aptamer based colorimetric assay is described for the determination of zearalenone (ZEN). It is based on the inhibition of the peroxidase-mimicking activity of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by the ZEN aptamer. However, in the presence of ZEN, the aptamer is bound by ZEN and can no longer inhibit the peroxidase-mimicking activity of AuNPs. The color change of solution is related to ZEN concentration and observed with bare eyes. Under optimal conditions, the absorbance (at 630 nm) increases linearly in the ZEN concentration range of 10–250 ng·mL−1, and the limit of detection is 10 ng·mL−1. The specificity of the assay was verified by studying the effect of potential interferents. The recoveries from ZEN spiked corn and corn oil range from 92 to 110%, and the relative standard deviations are between 2.4 and 6.4%. The results are in good agreement with those obtained by an ELISA.
