Abstract: Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging methods with good spatial and contrast resolution are often too slow to follow the uptake of contrast agents with the desired temporal resolution. Imaging can be accelerated by skipping the acquisition of data normally taken with strong phase-encoding gradients, restricting acquisition to weak-gradient data only. If the usual procedure of substituting zeros for the missing data is followed, blurring results. Substitutinit instead reference data taken before or well after contrast agent injection reduces this problem. Volunteer and patient images obtained by using such reference data show that imaging can be us~eiklly accelerated severalfold. Cortical and medullary regions of interest and whole kidney regions were studied, and both gradientanld spin-echo images are shown. The method is believed to be coimpatible with other acceleration methods such as half-Fourier reconstruction and reading of mare than one line of k space per excitation.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing power to devices via an A.C. power source, and for facilitating the use of LED-based light sources on A.C. power circuits that provide signals other than standard line voltages. In one example, LED-based light sources may be coupled to A.C. power circuits that are controlled by conventional dimmers (i.e, “A.C. dimmer circuits”). Hence, LED-based light sources may be conveniently substituted for other light sources (e.g., incandescent lights) in lighting environments employing conventional A.C. dimming devices and/or other control signals present on the A.C. power circuit. In yet other aspects, one or more parameters relating to the light generated by LED-based light sources (e.g., intensity, color, color temperature, temporal characteristics, etc.) may be conveniently controlled via operation of a conventional A.C. dimmer and/or other signals present on the A.C. power circuit.

Abstract: Background: Decision making in the care of pediatric patients with congenital and acquired heart disease remains reliant on detailed measurements of cardiac structures using 2-dimensional echocardiography. Calculated z scores are often used to normalize these measurements to the patient’s body size. Existing normal data in the literature are limited by small sample size, small numbers of measured cardiac structures, and inadequate data for the calculation of z scores. Accordingly, we sought to develop normative data in a large pediatric cohort using modern echocardiographic equipment from which z scores could be calculated. Methods: Two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography was performed in 782 patients ranging in age from 1 day to 18 years. Measurements were made of 21 individual cardiac structures. Regression equations were derived to relate the size of the various cardiac structures to body surface area. Data are presented graphically, and regression equations are derived relating cardiac dimension to body surface area.
