TL;DR: A fusion scheme that obtained superior results is presented, demonstrating that there is complementary information provided by the different algorithms and there is still room for further improvements in airway segmentation algorithms.
Abstract: This paper describes a framework for establishing a reference airway tree segmentation, which was used to quantitatively evaluate 15 different airway tree extraction algorithms in a standardized manner. Because of the sheer difficulty involved in manually constructing a complete reference standard from scratch, we propose to construct the reference using results from all algorithms that are to be evaluated. We start by subdividing each segmented airway tree into its individual branch segments. Each branch segment is then visually scored by trained observers to determine whether or not it is a correctly segmented part of the airway tree. Finally, the reference airway trees are constructed by taking the union of all correctly extracted branch segments. Fifteen airway tree extraction algorithms from different research groups are evaluated on a diverse set of 20 chest computed tomography (CT) scans of subjects ranging from healthy volunteers to patients with severe pathologies, scanned at different sites, with different CT scanner brands, models, and scanning protocols. Three performance measures covering different aspects of segmentation quality were computed for all participating algorithms. Results from the evaluation showed that no single algorithm could extract more than an average of 74% of the total length of all branches in the reference standard, indicating substantial differences between the algorithms. A fusion scheme that obtained superior results is presented, demonstrating that there is complementary information provided by the different algorithms and there is still room for further improvements in airway segmentation algorithms.

TL;DR: In this article, an electronic high frequency supply, such as a lamp ballast, having a full-wave rectifier, a storage capacitor charged to a voltage greater than the peak of the rectifier output, and an isolating diode between the rectifiers and the storage capacitor, is presented.
Abstract: An electronic high frequency supply, such as a lamp ballast, having a full-wave rectifier, a storage capacitor charged to a voltage greater than the peak of the rectifier output, and an isolating diode between the rectifier and the storage capacitor. An inverter is connected to the storage capacitor, and has a high frequency inductive load circuit connected between the inverter output and a junction between the isolating diode and the bridge rectifier. A capacitor, connected to the junction in parallel with a series circuit formed by the isolating diode and storage capacitor, forms a high frequency resonance circuit with the inductive load circuit. Current is drawn from the rectifier only as a series of pulses at the inverter frequency. To minimize variation in the high frequency load current, the inverter frequency is varied linearly with but oppositely to the instantaneous value of the rectifier output voltage.

TL;DR: In this paper, a spectrometer is used to measure the remagnetization spectrum of superparamagnetic nanoparticles for magnetic particle imaging (MPI) and the suitability of particles, for MPI, can be characterized.
Abstract: Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a tomographic imaging modality sensitive to the spatial distribution of magnetic particles. The spectrometer, described in this paper, is capable of measuring the remagnetization spectrum of superparamagnetic nanoparticles. With this spectrometer the suitability of particles, for MPI, can be characterized. Furthermore, the spectrometer can be used to estimate the particle size distribution, which allows for more accurate simulations in MPI.

TL;DR: In this paper, a multimodal identification system and method for identifying persons who are authorized to activate one or more vehicle mechanisms using both implicit identification of a face and an explicit identification of speech or a gesture is presented.
Abstract: A system and method for identifying persons who are authorized to activate one or more vehicle mechanisms uses both an implicit identification of a face and an explicit identification of speech or a gesture. This system and method enables identification to be performed where a single identification is otherwise unable to perform the identification for some reason and improves the reliability and accuracy of an identification so that only authorized persons can activate the vehicle mechanisms. Vehicle mechanisms that can be activated using this multimodal identification system and method include, for example, automatic locks, automatic windows, a trunk lock, a vehicle engine, outdoor or interior lights, and a vehicle alarm.
