TL;DR: Five hundred milligrams per day quercetin supplementation for 8 weeks resulted in significant improvements in clinical symptoms, disease activity, hs-TNFα, and HAQ in women with RA.
Abstract: Objective: Previous studies have shown that the bioflavonoid quercetin has anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive effects. We investigated the effect of quercetin supplementation on inflammation, disease severity, and clinical symptoms in women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).Methods: The present study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in which 50 women with RA were allocated into a quercetin (500 mg/day) or placebo group for 8 weeks. Plasma levels of high-sensitivity tumor necrosis factor-α (hs-TNFα), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), clinical symptoms including early morning stiffness (EMS), morning and after-activity pain, and tender (TSC) and swollen joint counts (SJC) were determined. Disease activity and functional disability were assessed by Disease Activity Score 28 (DAS-28), physician global assessment (PGA), and a health assessment questionnaire (HAQ) at the beginning and end of the study. Results: Quercetin supplementation for 8 weeks significantly reduced EMS,...

TL;DR: In vivo corneal confocal scan is a rapid noninvasive tool for the diagnosis of acanthamoeba and fungal keratitis with high sensitivity and specificity compared with smear and culture and may also be helpful in excluding fungal or acanthamoneba-like structures in cases with negative bacteriologic results and in early bacterial keratritis before clarification of microbiologic results.
Abstract: Purpose:To compare the sensitivity and specificity of confocal scan with the results of corneal and/or contact lens case smear and culture in the diagnosis of infectious keratitis. Methods:This was a diagnostic test study. Confocal scan and corneal and/or contact lens case smear and culture were perf

TL;DR: The major molecular pathways involved in free radical generation induced by hyperglycemia are described and may help us to improving the authors' preventive or therapeutic strategies.
Abstract: The prevalence of diabetes is growing worldwide with an increasing morbidity and mortality associated with the development of diabetes complications. Free radical production is a normal biological process that is strictly controlled and has been shown to be important in normal cellular homeostasis, and in the bodies response to pathogens. However, there are several mechanisms leading to excessive free radical production that overcome the normal protective quenching mechanisms. Studies have shown that many of the diabetes complications result from excessive free radical generation and oxidative stress, and it has been shown that chronic hyperglycemia is a potent inducer for free radical production, generated through several pathways and triggering multiple molecular mechanisms. An understanding of these processes may help us to improving our preventive or therapeutic strategies. In this review, the major molecular pathways involved in free radical generation induced by hyperglycemia are described.

TL;DR: In this part of this educational series, ROC curve is explained and two methods to determine the best cutoff value are explained.
Abstract: Multiple diagnostic tools are used by emergency physicians, every day. In addition, new tools are evaluated to obtain more accurate methods and reduce time or cost of conventional ones. In the previous parts of this educational series, we described diagnostic performance characteristics of diagnostic tests including sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and likelihood ratios. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve is a graphical presentation of screening characteristics. ROC curve is used to determine the best cutoff point and compare two or more tests or observers by measuring the area under the curve (AUC). In this part of our educational series, we explain ROC curve and two methods to determine the best cutoff value.

TL;DR: The importance of bringing the world's scientists together to find effective solutions for controlling the COVID-19 pandemic is discussed, by applying novel research frameworks, interdisciplinary collaboration promises to manage the pandemic’s consequences and prevent recurrences of similar pandemics.
Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has become the leading societal concern. The pandemic has shown that the public health concern is not only a medical problem, but also affects society as a whole; so, it has also become the leading scientific concern. We discuss in this treatise the importance of bringing the world's scientists together to find effective solutions for controlling the pandemic. By applying novel research frameworks, interdisciplinary collaboration promises to manage the pandemic's consequences and prevent recurrences of similar pandemics.
