Abstract: Computing the degree of semantic relatedness of words is a key functionality of many language applications such as search, clustering, and disambiguation. Previous approaches to computing semantic relatedness mostly used static language resources, while essentially ignoring their temporal aspects. We believe that a considerable amount of relatedness information can also be found in studying patterns of word usage over time. Consider, for instance, a newspaper archive spanning many years. Two words such as "war" and "peace" might rarely co-occur in the same articles, yet their patterns of use over time might be similar. In this paper, we propose a new semantic relatedness model, Temporal Semantic Analysis (TSA), which captures this temporal information. The previous state of the art method, Explicit Semantic Analysis (ESA), represented word semantics as a vector of concepts. TSA uses a more refined representation, where each concept is no longer scalar, but is instead represented as time series over a corpus of temporally-ordered documents. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to incorporate temporal evidence into models of semantic relatedness. Empirical evaluation shows that TSA provides consistent improvements over the state of the art ESA results on multiple benchmarks.

Abstract: We provide an introduction to theoretical and practical aspects of Boosting and Ensemble learning, providing a useful reference for researchers in the field of Boosting as well as for those seeking to enter this fascinating area of research. We begin with a short background concerning the necessary learning theoretical foundations of weak learners and their linear combinations. We then point out the useful connection between Boosting and the Theory of Optimization, which facilitates the understanding of Boosting and later on enables us to move on to new Boosting algorithms, applicable to a broad spectrum of problems. In order to increase the relevance of the paper to practitioners, we have added remarks, pseudo code, "tricks of the trade", and algorithmic considerations where appropriate. Finally, we illustrate the usefulness of Boosting algorithms by giving an overview of some existing applications. The main ideas are illustrated on the problem of binary classification, although several extensions are discussed.

Abstract: The purpose of our study is to extend the emerging empirical literature on the firm-level impact of human resource management practices. Results based on a national sample of organizations from private and public sectors in Israel indicate that these practices have a significant impact on both the perceived organizational and market performance of the organization. The single independent variable found to be statistically significant in affecting perceived organizational performance was training practices. In the case of perceived market performance, we found that, in addition to training practices, employee selection practices also significantly affected the perceived market performance.1 © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract: We present an experimental study on wave propagation in highly nonlocal optically nonlinear media, for which far-away boundary conditions significantly affect the evolution of localized beams. As an example, we set the boundary conditions to be anisotropic and demonstrate the first experimental observation of coherent elliptic solitons. Furthermore, exploiting the natural ability of such nonlinearities to eliminate azimuthal instabilities, we perform the first observation of stable vortex-ring solitons. These features of highly nonlocal nonlinearities affected by far-away boundary conditions open new directions in nonlinear science by facilitating remote control over soliton propagation.
