Abstract: An efficient algorithm for isometry-invariant matching of surfaces is presented. The key idea is computing the minimum-distortion mapping between two surfaces. For this purpose, we introduce the generalized multidimensional scaling, a computationally efficient continuous optimization algorithm for finding the least distortion embedding of one surface into another. The generalized multidimensional scaling algorithm allows for both full and partial surface matching. As an example, it is applied to the problem of expression-invariant three-dimensional face recognition.

Abstract: The ever-increasing demand for high-performing, economical, and safe power storage for portable electronics and electric vehicles stimulates RD in Li-ion cells, the objective of current research is to develop a 5-volt cell, and at the same time to maintain high specific charge capacity, excellent cycling, and safety. Since current anode materials possess working potentials fairly close to the potential of a lithium metal, the focus is on the development of cathode materials. This work reviews and analyzes the current state of the art, achievements, and challenges in the field of high-voltage cathode materials for Li-ion cells. Some suggestions regarding possible approaches for future development in the field are also presented.

Abstract: We present three alternative simple constructions of small probability spaces on n bits for which any k bits are almost independent. The number of bits used to specify a point in the sample space is (2 + o(1)) (log log n + k/2 + log k + log 1/ϵ), where ϵ is the statistical difference between the distribution induced on any k bit locations and the uniform distribution. This is asymptotically comparable to the construction recently presented by Naor and Naor (our size bound is better as long as ϵ < 1/(k log n)). An additional advantage of our constructions is their simplicity.

Abstract: Nucleus-independent chemical shifts (NICS) have been used extensively for the identification of aromaticity properties of molecules, ions, intermediates, and transition states since their introduction in 1996 by Schleyer et al. Initially, probes (bq's) were placed at the centers of systems (NICS(0)) and later, 1A above the molecular planes (NICS(1)). However, contradicting assignments of aromaticity by NICS and other methods were found for some systems. In this article, an alternative NICS-based method is introduced. The method is based on scanning NICS values over a distance and separating them into in-plane and out-of plane contributions. The shapes of the plots of the chemical shifts and their components as a function of the distance of the NICS probe (bq) from the molecular plane give a clear indication of diamagnetic and paramagnetic ring currents.
