TL;DR: A novel method for separating images into texture and piecewise smooth (cartoon) parts, exploiting both the variational and the sparsity mechanisms is presented, combining the basis pursuit denoising (BPDN) algorithm and the total-variation (TV) regularization scheme.
Abstract: The separation of image content into semantic parts plays a vital role in applications such as compression, enhancement, restoration, and more. In recent years, several pioneering works suggested such a separation be based on variational formulation and others using independent component analysis and sparsity. This paper presents a novel method for separating images into texture and piecewise smooth (cartoon) parts, exploiting both the variational and the sparsity mechanisms. The method combines the basis pursuit denoising (BPDN) algorithm and the total-variation (TV) regularization scheme. The basic idea presented in this paper is the use of two appropriate dictionaries, one for the representation of textures and the other for the natural scene parts assumed to be piecewise smooth. Both dictionaries are chosen such that they lead to sparse representations over one type of image-content (either texture or piecewise smooth). The use of the BPDN with the two amalgamed dictionaries leads to the desired separation, along with noise removal as a by-product. As the need to choose proper dictionaries is generally hard, a TV regularization is employed to better direct the separation process and reduce ringing artifacts. We present a highly efficient numerical scheme to solve the combined optimization problem posed by our model and to show several experimental results that validate the algorithm's performance.

TL;DR: The objective of this work is to survey and put in perspective the existing IMM methods for target tracking problems, with special attention to the assumptions underlying each algorithm and its applicability to various situations.
Abstract: The Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) estimator is a suboptimal hybrid filter that has been shown to be one of the most cost-effective hybrid state estimation schemes. The main feature of this algorithm is its ability to estimate the state of a dynamic system with several behavior modes which can "switch" from one to another. In particular, the IMM estimator can be a self-adjusting variable-bandwidth filter, which makes it natural for tracking maneuvering targets. The importance of this approach is that it is the best compromise available currently-between complexity and performance: its computational requirements are nearly linear in the size of the problem (number of models) while its performance is almost the same as that of an algorithm with quadratic complexity. The objective of this work is to survey and put in perspective the existing IMM methods for target tracking problems. Special attention is given to the assumptions underlying each algorithm and its applicability to various situations.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors study the effects of an imperfect production process on the optimal production cycle time and derive the optimal cycle time for the case where the defective rate is a function of the set-up cost.
Abstract: In this paper, we study the effects of an imperfect production process on the optimal production cycle time. The system is assumed to deteriorate during the production process and produce some proportion of defective items. The optimal production cycle is derived, and is shown to be shorter than that of the classical Economic Manufacturing Quantity model. The analysis is extended to the case where the defective rate is a function of the set-up cost, for which the set-up cost level and the production cycle time are jointly optimized. Finally, we also consider the case where the deterioration process is dynamic in its nature, i.e., the proportion of defective items is not constant. Both linear, exponential, and multi-state deteriorating processes are studied. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the derivation of the optimal production cycle time in these situations.

TL;DR: The CDMA channel with randomly and independently chosen spreading sequences accurately models the situation where pseudonoise sequences span many symbol periods and provides a comparison baseline for CDMA channels with deterministic signature waveforms spanning one symbol period.
Abstract: The CDMA channel with randomly and independently chosen spreading sequences accurately models the situation where pseudonoise sequences span many symbol periods. Furthermore, its analysis provides a comparison baseline for CDMA channels with deterministic signature waveforms spanning one symbol period. We analyze the spectral efficiency (total capacity per chip) as a function of the number of users, spreading gain, and signal-to-noise ratio, and we quantify the loss in efficiency relative to an optimally chosen set of signature sequences and relative to multiaccess with no spreading. White Gaussian background noise and equal-power synchronous users are assumed. The following receivers are analyzed: (a) optimal joint processing, (b) single-user matched filtering, (c) decorrelation, and (d) MMSE linear processing.
