Abstract: We surveyed the distribution and diversity of fungi associated with eight macroalgae from Antarctica and their capability to produce bioactive compounds. The collections yielded 148 fungal isolates, which were identified using molecular methods as belonging to 21 genera and 50 taxa. The most frequent taxa were Geomyces species (sp.), Penicillium sp. and Metschnikowia australis. Seven fungal isolates associated with the endemic Antarctic macroalgae Monostroma hariotii (Chlorophyte) displayed high internal transcribed spacer sequences similarities with the psychrophilic pathogenic fungus Geomyces destructans. Thirty-three fungal singletons (66%) were identified, representing rare components of the fungal communities. The fungal communities displayed high diversity, richness and dominance indices; however, rarefaction curves indicated that not all of the fungal diversity present was recovered. Penicillium sp. UFMGCB 6034 and Penicillium sp. UFMGCB 6120, recovered from the endemic species Palmaria decipiens (Rhodophyte) and M. hariotii, respectively, yielded extracts with high and selective antifungal and/or trypanocidal activities, in which a preliminary spectral analysis using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy indicated the presence of highly functionalised aromatic compounds. These results suggest that the endemic and cold-adapted macroalgae of Antarctica shelter a rich, diversity and complex fungal communities consisting of a few dominant indigenous or mesophilic cold-adapted species, and a large number of rare and/or endemic taxa, which may provide an interesting model of algal–fungal interactions under extreme conditions as well as a potential source of bioactive compounds.

Abstract: In mice experimentally infected with Schistosoma mansoni, praziquantel (2-cyclohexylcarbonyl-1,3,4,6,7,11b-hexahydro-2H-pyrazino[2,1-a]isoquinoline-4-one), administered orally at the levels of 100 and 50 mg/kg, for 5 consecutive days, produced oogram changes in all animals and a pronounced hepatic shift of schistosomes (97.1 and 89.1, respectively). At lowest levels (12.5 and 6.3 mg/kg), alterations in the oogram could still be detected, although hepatic shift of schistosomes was no more evident. After a single intramuscular injection, the results obtained paralleled those observed with a single-dose oral treatment. The hepatic shift was only moderate at 200 and 100 mg/kg and the percentages of worms retained in the liver, after perfusion, were particularly low. When nasal route in a 1-day regimen was used, the results obtained were slightly less evident as compared with those observed by oral route (5-day schedule).

Abstract: Large content providers build points of presence around the world, each connected to tens or hundreds of networks. Ideally, this connectivity lets providers better serve users, but providers cannot obtain enough capacity on some preferred peering paths to handle peak traffic demands. These capacity constraints, coupled with volatile traffic and performance and the limitations of the 20 year old BGP protocol, make it difficult to best use this connectivity.We present Edge Fabric, an SDN-based system we built and deployed to tackle these challenges for Facebook, which serves over two billion users from dozens of points of presence on six continents. We provide the first public details on the connectivity of a provider of this scale, including opportunities and challenges. We describe how Edge Fabric operates in near real-time to avoid congesting links at the edge of Facebook's network. Our evaluation on production traffic worldwide demonstrates that Edge Fabric efficiently uses interconnections without congesting them and degrading performance. We also present real-time performance measurements of available routes and investigate incorporating them into routing decisions. We relate challenges, solutions, and lessons from four years of operating and evolving Edge Fabric.

Abstract: The use of recent advances in resonance Raman spectroscopy studies on isolated carbon nanotubes and the scientific knowledge achieved so far from these studies is discussed in the context of advancing carbon nanotube-based technology. Changes in the Raman spectra can be used to probe and monitor structural modifications of the nanotube sidewalls that come from the introduction of defects and the attachment of different chemical species. The former effect can be probed through the analysis of the disorder-induced Raman modes and the latter through the upshifts/downshifts observed in the various Raman modes due to charge transfer effects.

Abstract: The relationships and distribution of spermatogonia were studied as a function of the stage of the seminiferous epithelium cycle in rats. Primitive spermatogonia in the mouse are located along regions of the basal lamina that face the interstitium. Before studying the distribution of spermatogonia in rats, it was necessary to characterize the various types of spermatogonia, as recently performed for mice. The Strauss’ linear index (Li) selectivity method was then used and spermatogonia of the Asingle (As )t o Aaligned (Aal) lineage were preferentially found to be located in regions opposing the interstitium at stages V, VII and IX of the spermatogenic cycle. Because relatively little tubuleto-tubule contact occurs in rats, the aim of this study was to determine whether tubule-to-tubule contact or tubule proximity (or alternatively, the amount of interstitium) was an important factor in spermatogonial position. In this regard, another method (tubule proximity) was devised to determine spermatogonial position that accounted for the presence of adjacent tubules. This method showed that the position of tubules, rather than tubule contact, was more accurate than the Li method in determining the location of spermatogonia in the rat. The results also showed a non-random distribution of spermatogonia resembling that of the mouse, and that tubule-to-tubule contact is not essential for the positioning of spermatogonia. In conclusion, the results of this study strongly indicate that the most primitive type A spermatogonia (As ,A paired and Aal )i n rats are present in niches located in those areas of the seminiferous tubules that border the interstitial tissue.
