Abstract: We present evolutionary models for cool brown dwarfs and extra-solar giant planets. The models reproduce the main trends of observed methane dwarfs in near-IR color-magnitude diagrams. We also present evolutionary models for irradiated planets, coupling for the first time irradiated atmosphere profiles and inner structures. We focus on HD 209458-like systems and show that irradiation effects can substantially affect the radius of sub-jovian mass giant planets. Irradiation effects, however, cannot alone explain the large observed radius of HD 209458b. Adopting assumptions which optimise irradiation effects and taking into account the extension of the outer atmospheric layers, we still find $\\sim$ 20% discrepancy between observed and theoretical radii. An extra source of energy seems to be required to explain the observed value of the first transit planet.

Abstract: A previous placebo-controlled trial has shown that biodegradable 1,3-bis (2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU) wafers (Gliadel wafers) prolong survival in patients with recurrent glioblastoma multiforme. A previously completed phase 3 trial, also placebo controlled, in 32 patients with newly diagnosed malignant glioma also demonstrated a survival benefit in those patients treated with BCNU wafers. Because of the small number of patients in that trial, a larger phase 3 trial was performed to confirm these results. Two hundred forty patients were randomized to receive either BCNU or placebo wafers at the time of primary surgical resection; both groups were treated with external beam radiation postoperatively. The two groups were similar for age, sex, Karnofsky performance status (KPS), and tumor histology. Median survival in the intent-to-treat group was 13.9 months for the BCNU wafer-treated group and 11.6 months for the placebo-treated group (log-rank P -value stratified by country = 0.03), with a 29% reduction in the risk of death in the treatment group. When adjusted for factors affecting survival, the treatment effect remained positive with a risk reduction of 28% ( P = 0.03). Abstract: Bioleaching of metal sulfides is caused by astonishingly diverse groups of bacteria. Today, at least 11 putative prokaryotic divisions can be related to this phenomenon. In contrast, the dissolution (bio)chemistry of metal sulfides follows only two pathways, which are determined by the acid-solubility of the sulfides: the thiosulfate and the polysulfide pathway. The bacterial cell can effect this sulfide dissolution by “contact” and “non-contact” mechanisms. The non-contact mechanism assumes that the bacteria oxidize only dissolved iron(II) ions to iron(III) ions. The latter can then attack metal sulfides and be reduced to iron(II) ions. The contact mechanism requires attachment of bacteria to the sulfide surface. The primary mechanism for attachment to pyrite is electrostatic in nature. In the case of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, bacterial exopolymers contain iron(III) ions, each complexed by two uronic acid residues. The resulting positive charge allows attachment to the negatively charged pyrite. Thus, the first function of complexed iron(III) ions in the contact mechanism is mediation of cell attachment, while their second function is oxidative dissolution of the metal sulfide, similar to the role of free iron(III) ions in the non-contact mechanism. In both cases, the electrons extracted from the metal sulfide reduce molecular oxygen via a complex redox chain located below the outer membrane, the periplasmic space, and the cytoplasmic membrane of leaching bacteria. The dominance of either At. ferrooxidans or Leptospirillum ferrooxidans in mesophilic leaching habitats is highly likely to result from differences in their biochemical iron(II) oxidation pathways, especially the involvement of rusticyanin.

Abstract: Background—Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) have gained attention as critical mediators of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Myeloperoxidase (MPO), a hemoprotein abundantly expressed by PMNs and secreted during activation, possesses potent proinflammatory properties and may contribute directly to tissue injury. However, whether MPO also provides prognostic information in patients with ACS remains unknown. Methods and Results—MPO serum levels were assessed in 1090 patients with ACS. We recorded death and myocardial infarctions during 6 months of follow-up. MPO levels did not correlate with troponin T, soluble CD40 ligand, or C-reactive protein levels or with ST-segment changes. However, patients with elevated MPO levels (350 g/L; 31.3%) experienced a markedly increased cardiac risk (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 2.25 [1.32 to 3.82]; P0.003). In particular, MPO serum levels identified patients at risk who had troponin T levels below 0.01 g/L (adjusted HR 7.48 [95% CI 1.98 to 28.29]; P0.001). In a multivariate model that included other biochemical markers, troponin T (HR 1.99; P0.023), C-reactive protein (1.25; P0.044), vascular endothelial growth factor (HR 1.87; P0.041), soluble CD40 ligand (HR 2.78; P0.001), and MPO (HR 2.11; P0.008) were all independent predictors of the patient’s 6-month outcome. Conclusions—In patients with ACS, MPO serum levels powerfully predict an increased risk for subsequent cardiovascular events and extend the prognostic information gained from traditional biochemical markers. Given its proinflammatory properties, MPO may serve as both a marker and mediator of vascular inflammation and further points toward the significance of PMN activation in the pathophysiology of ACS. Abstract: We demonstrate the controlled growth of high aspect ratio anatase TiO2 nanorods by hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) in oleic acid (OLEA) as surfactant at a temperature as low as 80 °C. Chemical modification of TTIP by OLEA is proven to be a rational strategy to tune the reactivity of the precursor toward water. The most influential factors in shape control of the nanoparticles are investigated by simply manipulating their growth kinetics. The presence of tertiary amines or quaternary ammonium hydroxides as catalysts is essential to promote fast crystallization under mild conditions. The novelty of the present approach relies on the large-scale production of organic-capped TiO2 nanocrystals to which standard processing of colloidal nanocrystals, such as surface ligand exchange, can be applied for the first time. Abstract: Binding events of ligands to receptors are the key for an understanding of biological processes. Gaining insight into protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions in solution has recently become possible on an atomic level by new NMR spectroscopic techniques. These experiments identify binding events either by looking at the resonance signals of the ligand or the protein. Ideally, both techniques together deliver a complete picture of ligand binding to a receptor. The approaches discussed in this review allow screening of compound libraries as well as a detailed identification of the groups involved in the binding events. Also, characterization of the binding strength and kinetics is possible, competitive binding as well as allosteric effects can be identified, and it has even been possible to identify ligand binding to intact viruses and membrane-bound proteins.

Abstract: We demonstrate that efficient shape control may be achieved in the shell of colloidally grown semiconductor nanocrystals (independent of the core), allowing the combination of a 0-D spherical CdSe core with a 1-D rodlike CdS shell. Besides exhibiting linearly polarized emission with a room-temperature quantum efficiency above 70%, these mixed-dimensionality colloidal heterostructures display large, length-dependent Stokes shifts as well as giant extinction coefficients approaching 107cm-1 M-1.

Abstract: Background The T-20 vs. Optimized Regimen Only Study 2 (TORO 2) compared the efficacy and safety of 24 weeks of treatment with the fusion inhibitor enfuvirtide in combination with an optimized background antiretroviral regimen with the efficacy and safety of the optimized background regimen alone. Methods The patients had previous treatment with each of the three classes of antiretroviral drugs, documented resistance to each class, or both and a plasma level of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) RNA of at least 5000 copies per milliliter. They were randomly assigned in a 2:1 ratio to receive either enfuvirtide (90 mg twice daily) plus a background regimen optimized with the aid of resistance testing (enfuvirtide group) or the background regimen alone (control group). Abstract: Recent empirical work shows that a better legal environment leads to lower expected rates of return in an international cross-section of countries. This paper investigates whether differences in firm-specific corporate governance also help to explain expected returns in a cross-section of firms within a single jurisdiction. Constructing a corporate governance rating (CGR) for German firms, we document a positive relationship between the CGR and firm value. In addition, there is strong evidence that expected returns are negatively correlated with the CGR, if dividend yields and price-earnings ratios are used as proxies for the cost of capital. Most results are robust for endogeneity, with causation running from corporate governance practices to firm fundamentals. Finally, an investment strategy that bought high-CGR firms and shorted low-CGR firms would have earned abnormal returns of around 12 percent on an annual basis during the sample period. We rationalize the empirical evidence with lower agency costs and/or the removal of certain governance malfunctions for the high-CGR firms.

Abstract: A new approach to the model-independent description of quantum field theories will be introduced in the present work. The main feature of this new approach is to incorporate in a local sense the principle of general covariance of general relativity, thus giving rise to the concept of a locally covariant quantum field theory. Such locally covariant quantum field theories will be described mathematically in terms of covariant functors between the categories, on one side, of globally hyperbolic spacetimes with isometric embeddings as morphisms and, on the other side, of *-algebras with unital injective *-monomorphisms as morphisms. Moreover, locally covariant quantum fields can be described in this framework as natural transformations between certain functors. The usual Haag-Kastler framework of nets of operator-algebras over a fixed spacetime background-manifold, together with covariant automorphic actions of the isometry-group of the background spacetime, can be re-gained from this new approach as a special case. Examples of this new approach are also outlined. In case that a locally covariant quantum field theory obeys the time-slice axiom, one can naturally associate to it certain automorphic actions, called ``relative Cauchy-evolutions'', which describe the dynamical reaction of the quantum field theory to a local change of spacetime background metrics. The functional derivative of a relative Cauchy-evolution with respect to the spacetime metric is found to be a divergence-free quantity which has, as will be demonstrated in an example, the significance of an energy-momentum tensor (up to addition of scalar functions) for the locally covariant quantum field theory. Furthermore, we discuss the functorial properties of state spaces of locally covariant quantum field theories that entail the validity of the principle of local definiteness.

Abstract: Plastid matK gene sequences for 374 genera representing all angiosperm orders and 12 genera of gymnosperms were analyzed using parsimony (MP) and Bayesian inference (BI) approaches. Traditionally, slowly evolving genomic regions have been preferred for deep-level phylogenetic inference in angiosperms. The matK gene evolves approximately three times faster than the widely used plastid genes rbcL and atpB. The MP and BI trees are highly congruent. The robustness of the strict consensus tree supercedes all individual gene analyses and is comparable only to multigene-based phylogenies. Of the 385 nodes resolved, 79% are supported by high jackknife values, averaging 88%. Amborella is sister to the remaining angiosperms, followed by a grade of Nymphaeaceae and Austrobaileyales. Bayesian inference resolves Amborella + Nymphaeaceae as sister to the rest, but with weak (0.42) posterior probability. The MP analysis shows a trichotomy sister to the Austrobaileyales representing eumagnoliids, monocots + Chloranthales, and Ceratophyllum + eudicots. The matK gene produces the highest internal support yet for basal eudicots and, within core eudicots, resolves a crown group comprising Berberidopsidaceae/Aextoxicaceae, Santalales, and Caryophyllales + asterids. Moreover, matK sequences provide good resolution within many angiosperm orders. Combined analyses of matK and other rapidly evolving DNA regions with available multigene data sets have strong potential to enhance resolution and internal support in deep level angiosperm phylogenetics and provide additional insights into angiosperm evolution.

Abstract: Many countries strive to reduce the emissions of nitrogen compounds (ammonia, nitrate, NOx) to the surface waters and the atmosphere. Since mainstream domestic wastewater treatment systems are usually already overloaded with ammonia, a dedicated nitrogen removal from concentrated secondary or industrial wastewaters is often more cost-effective than the disposal of such wastes to domestic wastewater treatment. The cost-effectiveness of separate treatment has increased dramatically in the past few years, since several processes for the biological removal of ammonia from concentrated waste streams have become available. Here, we review those processes that make use of new concepts in microbiology: partial nitrification, nitrifier denitrification and anaerobic ammonia oxidation (the anammox process). These processes target the removal of ammonia from gases, and ammonium-bicarbonate from concentrated wastewaters (i.e. sludge liquor and landfill leachate). The review addresses the microbiology, its consequences for their application, the current status regarding application, and the future developments.

Abstract: Rational politicians are interested in judicial independence (JI) in order to make their promises credible. But if politicians' preferences deviate from the dicta of the judiciary, they also have incentives to renege on judicial independence. These two conflicting aspects are measured by two indicators: (i) de iure JI focusing on its legal foundations and (ii) a de facto JI focusing on countries' actual experience. Whether JI affects economic growth is tested for a cross section of 57 countries. While de iure JI does not have an impact on real GDP growth per capita, de facto JI positively influences it.

Abstract: Interactions between cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM) have long been accepted to have pivotal roles in neural development and regeneration. Recent data also support the involvement of several ECM molecules in synaptic plasticity. Here, we review the present knowledge of the underlying mechanisms. These include interactions with cell surface receptors for ECM molecules coupled to the cytoskeleton and tyrosine kinase activities, and interactions with ion channels or neurotransmitter receptors. We hypothesize that ECM molecules derived from neurons and glia might also shape synaptic plasticity through regulation of organelle trafficking, and by imposing diffusion constraints for neurotransmitters and trophic factors.

Abstract: Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy is used to determine the energy level alignment at interfaces between three electroactive conjugated organic molecular materials, i.e., N,N′-bis-(1-naphthyl)-N,N′-diphenyl1-1,1-biphenyl1-4,4′-diamine; para-sexiphenyl; pentacene, and two high work function electrode materials, i.e., gold and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate). Although both electrode surfaces have a similar work function (∼5 eV), the hole injection barrier and the interfacial dipole barrier are found to be significantly smaller for all the interfaces formed on the polymer as compared to the metal. This important and very general result is linked to one of the basic mechanisms that control molecular level alignment at interfaces with metals, i.e., the reduction of the electronic surface dipole contribution to the metal work function by adsorbed molecules.

Abstract: Histone-modifying enzymes play essential roles in physiological and aberrant gene regulation. Since histone deacetylases (HDACs) are promising targets of cancer therapy, it is important to understand the mechanisms of HDAC regulation. Selective modulators of HDAC isoenzymes could serve as efficient and well-tolerated drugs. We show that HDAC2 undergoes basal turnover by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Valproic acid (VPA), in addition to selectively inhibiting the catalytic activity of class I HDACs, induces proteasomal degradation of HDAC2, in contrast to other inhibitors such as trichostatin A (TSA). Basal and VPA-induced HDAC2 turnover critically depend on the E2 ubiquitin conjugase Ubc8 and the E3 ubiquitin ligase RLIM. Ubc8 gene expression is induced by both VPA and TSA, whereas only TSA simultaneously reduces RLIM protein levels and therefore fails to induce HDAC2 degradation. Thus, poly-ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation provide an isoenzyme-selective mechanism for downregulation of HDAC2.

Abstract: In this paper I argue against the widespread assumption that the English language in its role as lingua franca is a serious threat to national languages and to multilingualism. I support this argument by making a distinction between ‘languages for communication’ and ‘languages for identification’. Further support for the stance against one-sidedly attacking English as a killer language will be drawn from the findings of three research projects currently being carried out at Hamburg University, one on the impact English has on discourse norms in influential genres in other languages; the second one on the nature of interactions in English as a lingua franca; and the third one on so-called ‘international degree programmes’, in which English is the language of instruction. Finally, I make some tentative suggestions for a new research paradigm for English as a lingua franca.

Abstract: High quality CoPt(3) nanocrystals were synthesized via simultaneous reduction of platinum acetylacetonate and thermodecomposition of cobalt carbonyl in the presence of 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid and hexadecylamine as stabilizing agents. The high flexibility and reproducibility of the synthesis allows us to consider CoPt(3) nanocrystals as a model system for the hot organometallic synthesis of metal nanoparticles. Different experimental conditions (reaction temperature, concentration of stabilizing agents, ratio between cobalt and platinum precursors, etc.) have been investigated to reveal the processes governing the formation of the metal alloy nanocrystals. It was found that CoPt(3) nanocrystals nucleate and grow up to their final size at an early stage of the synthesis with no Ostwald ripening observed upon further heating. In this case, the nanocrystal size can be controlled only via proper balance between the rates for nucleation and for growth from the molecular precursors. Thus, the size of CoPt(3) nanocrystals can be precisely tuned from approximately 3 nm up to approximately 18 nm in a predictable and reproducible way. The mechanism of homogeneous nucleation, evolution of the nanocrystal ensemble in the absence of Ostwald ripening, nanocrystal faceting, and size-dependent magnetic properties are investigated and discussed on the example of CoPt(3) magnetic alloy nanocrystals. The developed approach was found to be applicable to other systems, e.g., FePt and CoPd(2) magnetic alloy nanocrystals.

Abstract: During the menstrual cycle, the ovarian hormones oestradiol and progesterone control the ordered growth and differentiation of uterine cells. This remodelling process is critical for implantation of the developing embryo, the formation of the placenta, and maintenance of pregnancy. Failure of uterine tIssues to respond appropriately to ovarian hormone signalling results in defective placentation, associated with a spectrum of pregnancy disorders such as recurrent miscarriages and preeclampsia. These obstetrical disorders are a major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Progesterone exerts its action on target cells, at least in part, through binding to the progesterone receptor (PR), a member of the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily of ligand-activated transcription factors. The mechanism by which progesterone controls the differentiation of human endometrial stromal cells, a process termed decidualization, in the secretory phase of the menstrual cycle is not well understood. Emerging evidence indicates that locally expressed factors and activation of the cAMP second messenger pathway integrate hormonal inputs and confer cellular specificity to progesterone action through the induction of diverse transcription factors capable of modulating PR function.

Abstract: We develop a dipole model for DESY HERA deep inelastic scattering data which incorporates the impact parameter distribution of the proton. The model describes the inclusive total ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}p$ cross sections as well as the diffractive $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ differential cross sections. We compare the model with previous approaches and show that the t distributions are sensitive to saturation phenomena. We estimate the boundary of the saturation region and show that it dominates the data in the low-${Q}^{2}$ region where the total ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}p$ cross section exhibits the same universal rise as hadronic cross sections. The model is then extended to nuclei and shows good agreement with the nuclear shadowing data at small x. Finally, we estimate the saturation scale in nuclei.

Abstract: In light of recent studies indicating a relationship between child abuse and the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, this study investigated the hypotheses that childhood sexual and physical abuse are related to hallucinations, delusions, and thought disorder in adults, and that those relationships are greater in those who have suffered abuse during adulthood as well as childhood. In 200 community mental-health-centre clients, the clinically evaluated symptomatology of the 92 clients whose files documented sexual or physical abuse at some point in their lives was compared with that of the 108 for whom no abuse was documented. In the 60 patients for whom child abuse was documented, hallucinations (including all six subtypes), but not delusions, thought disorder or negative symptoms, were significantly more common than in the non-abused group. Adult sexual assault was related to hallucinations, delusions, and thought disorder. In linear regression analysis, a combination of child abuse and adult abuse predicted hallucinations, delusions, and thought disorder. However, child abuse was a significant predictor of auditory and tactile hallucinations, even in the absence of adult abuse. Possible psychological and neurobiological pathways from abuse to symptoms are discussed, along with research and clinical implications.

Abstract: The literature on tourism and climate change lacks an analysis of the global changes in tourism demand. Here, a simulation model of international tourism is presented that fills that gap. The current pattern of international tourist flows is modelled using 1995 data on departures and arrivals for 207 countries. Using this basic model the impact on arrivals and departures through changes in population, per capita income and climate change are analysed. In the medium to long term, tourism will grow, however, the change from climate change is smaller than from population and income changes.

Abstract: We report different approaches to the synthesis of size series of highly luminescent CdSe/CdS core−shell nanocrystals. The mixture of hexadecylamine (HDA)−trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO)−trioctylphosphine (TOP) as stabilizing solvent was found to be very suitable for one-pot synthesis of nearly monodisperse CdSe nanocrystals followed by growing the CdS shell of a desired thickness. The obtained CdSe/CdS nanocrystals exhibited a narrow PL band (fwhm ∼27−35 nm) with reproducible room-temperature quantum yields as high as 50−85%. The emission color is tunable from green to red with increasing diameter of CdSe cores and/or thickness of the CdS shell. The possibility of preparing high-quality CdSe/CdS core−shell nanocrystals from the precursors cadmium acetate and H2S, which are more environmentally benign than conventional ones (e.g., dimethylcadmium) used in the organometallic synthesis of nanocrystals, was demonstrated. Abstract: There is abundant evidence that the endothelium plays a crucial role in the maintenance of vascular tone and structure. One of the major endothelium-derived vasoactive mediators is nitric oxide (NO). Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an endogenous inhibitor of NO synthase. ADMA inhibits vascular NO production at concentrations found in pathophysiological conditions (i.e., 3-15 micromol/l); ADMA also causes local vasoconstriction when it is infused intraarterially. The biochemical and physiological pathways related to ADMA are now well understood: dimethylarginines are the result of the degradation of methylated proteins; the methyl group is derived from S-adenosylmethionine. Both ADMA and its regioisomer, SDMA, are eliminated from the body by renal excretion, whereas only ADMA, but not SDMA, is metabolized via hydrolytic degradation to citrulline and dimethylamine by the enzyme dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH). DDAH activity and/or expression may therefore contribute to the pathogenesis of endothelial dysfunction in various diseases. ADMA is increased in the plasma of humans with hypercholesterolemia, atherosclerosis, hypertension, chronic renal failure, and chronic heart failure. Increased ADMA levels are associated with reduced NO synthesis as assessed by impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilation. In several prospective and cross-sectional studies, ADMA evolved as a marker of cardiovascular risk. With our increasing knowledge of the role of ADMA in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, ADMA is becoming a goal for pharmacotherapeutic intervention. Among other treatments, the administration of L-arginine has been shown to improve endothelium-dependent vascular function in subjects with high ADMA levels.

Abstract: Language acquisition in humans relies on abilities like abstraction and use of syntactic rules, which are absent in other animals. The neural correlate of acquiring new linguistic competence was investigated with two functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies. German native speakers learned a sample of 'real' grammatical rules of different languages (Italian or Japanese), which, although parametrically different, follow the universal principles of grammar (UG). Activity during this task was compared with that during a task that involved learning 'unreal' rules of language. 'Unreal' rules were obtained manipulating the original two languages; they used the same lexicon as Italian or Japanese, but were linguistically illegal, as they violated the principles of UG. Increase of activation over time in Broca's area was specific for 'real' language acquisition only, independent of the kind of language. Thus, in Broca's area, biological constraints and language experience interact to enable linguistic competence for a new language.
