TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a theoretical overview of how parties in modern democracies are using the Internet to perform a range of key functions, such as opinion formation, interest mediation and party organization.
Abstract: The article provides a theoretical overview of how parties in modern democracies are using the Internet to perform a range of key functions, such as opinion formation, interest mediation and party organization. Drawing on the party goals’ literature and classic party typologies, the central argument of the article is that new information and communication technologies (ICTs) are utilized in different ways by different types of political parties. While some parties stress the downward dissemination of information via new ICTs, others emphasize their interactive and targeting possibilities. The findings of the articles included in this Special Issue are profiled and assessed for the extent to which they provide empirical support for the strategies outlined.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present results of a cross-national research project on self-employment in eleven advanced economies and demonstrate how and why the practice is reemerging in modern societies.
Abstract: This book presents results of a cross-national research project on self-employment in eleven advanced economies and demonstrates how and why the practice is reemerging in modern societies. While traditional forms of self-employment, such as skilled crafts work and shop keeping, are in decline, they are being replaced by self-employment in both professional and unskilled occupations. Differences in self- employment across societies depend on the extent to which labor markets are regulated and the degree to which intergenerational family relationships are a primary factor structuring social organization.|For each of the eleven countries analyzed, the book highlights the extent to which social background, educational attainment, work history, family status, and gender affect the likelihood that an individual will enter -and continue- a particular type of selfemployment. While involvement with self-employment is becoming more common, it is occurring for individuals in activities that are more diverse, unstable, and transitory than in years past.

TL;DR: In this paper, high-resolution gas chromatography and mass spectrometry for DDT and metabolites, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), toxaphenes, hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), chlorinated cyclodienes and chlorinated benzenes were found in every patient.
Abstract: Some pesticides and synthetic chemicals are known to act as hormonal modulators, often possessing oestrogenic activity (xenooestrogens). They are persistent and accumulate in fatty tissue. Aim of our study is to address the question, whether a selection of such compounds is to be found in the fatty tissue of children undergoing surgical procedures and whether there are differences in values obtained from patients with or without undescended testes. Fat samples of 48 patients, 18 of whom had undescended testes, were examined by high-resolution gas chromatography and mass spectrometry for DDT and metabolites, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), toxaphenes, hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), chlorinated cyclodienes and chlorinated benzenes. We were able to find accumulation of all substances in every patient. Statistical analysis revealed a highly significant difference between patients from the control group and those from the undescended testes group for two compounds, namely heptachloroepoxide (HCE) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB), increased values being found in the patients with undescended testes. Since the aetiology of this entity is unknown in most of the cases, prenatal exposure to exogenous oestrogens is an attractive and plausible hypothesis. In order to confirm this, some questions will have to be answered in further studies: effect of exposure to xenooestrogens during a specific period of development, probable role of other substances with proven or suspected hormonal activity, potential synergism of such compounds and differences in individual susceptibility.

TL;DR: It appears that political representation of EU preferences works rather well regarding the grand directions of policy making, and that party elites behave responsively in view of changing EU preferences among their voters.
Abstract: This article asks two questions: first, why are party voters less favourable towards specific EU policies than party elites?; second, how does political representation of EU preferences actually work, is it an elite- or a mass-driven process? The data-sets of the European Election Studies 1979 and 1994 are analysed which involve both an elite and a mass survey component. In contrast to earlier research, it appears that political representation of EU preferences works rather well regarding the grand directions of policy making, and that party elites behave responsively in view of changing EU preferences among their voters.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present empirical evidence on the role of taxes in these relocation decisions and find that the additional tax due in the home country upon repatriation of foreign profits has a positive effect on the probability of relocation.
