TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed an instructive research agenda concerning studies on success and failure of NPOs, shedding light on theoretical approaches used, empirical evidence on the determinants of these constructs, and the sectors analyzed most frequently in this regard.
Abstract: Success and failure of nonprofit organizations (NPOs) have been prominent themes in the nonprofit community for more than 30 years. However, since there is no common understanding on success and failure of NPOs, the research field is still fragmented. Drawing from research on organizational success and failure in the for-profit context as a theoretical background, this paper systemizes the academic knowledge on NPO success and failure. By shedding light on theoretical approaches used, empirical evidence on the determinants of these constructs, and the sectors analyzed most frequently in this regard, the paper develops an instructive research agenda concerning studies on success and failure of NPOs.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors use a parametrized abstraction of detailed behavioral reports automatically generated by sandbox environments and explore two visualization techniques: treemaps and thread graphs to support human analysts in detecting maliciousness of software and classifying malicious behavior.
Abstract: We study techniques to visualize the behavior of malicious software (malware) Our aim is to help human analysts to quickly assess and classify the nature of a new malware sample Our techniques are based on a parametrized abstraction of detailed behavioral reports automatically generated by sandbox environments We then explore two visualization techniques: treemaps and thread graphs We argue that both techniques can effectively support a human analyst (a) in detecting maliciousness of software, and (b) in classifying malicious behavior

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the psychometric properties of the German-language version of the 60-item HEXACO Personality Inventory and found that it exhibited a meaningful pattern of correlations to the Big-Five factors.
Abstract: Zusammenfassung. Schlusselworter: Personlichkeit, HEXACO, ESEM, Messinvarianz Factor structure, psychometric properties, and measurement invariance of the German-language version of the 60-item HEXACO Personality Inventory Abstract. Recent lexical studies across several languages have provided evidence for six factors describing the structure of personality: the HEXACO model of personality. The present study examined the psychometric properties of the German-language version of the 60- item HEXACO Personality Inventory. The purported factor structure was confirmed using a large sample of N = 3240 participants. The emerged factors showed satisfactory internal consistencies and were virtually uncorrelated. Moreover, measurement invariance across gender was established. A second study (N = 853) showed that the 60-item HEXACO provides a close proxy to the 96-item version. In a third study (N = 235), the HEXACO-60 exhibited a meaningful pattern of correlations to the Big-Five factors. Finally, a fourth study (N = 31) provided evidence for high 7-month re-test reliability. The German-language version of the HEXACO-60 can thus be regarded as a sound tool for a reliable, valid, and relatively economical assessment of the HEXACO model.

TL;DR: In this article, the causal effect of direct democracy on government spending is investigated using historical data for all Swiss cantons from 1890 to 2000, using fixed effects to control for unobserved heterogeneity and instrumental variables.
Abstract: Using historical data for all Swiss cantons from 1890 to 2000, we estimate the causal effect of direct democracy on government spending. The main innovation in this paper is that we use fixed effects to control for unobserved heterogeneity and instrumental variables to address the potential endogeneity of institutions. We find that the budget referendum and lower costs to launch a voter initiative are effective tools in reducing canton level spending. However, we find no evidence that the budget referendum results in more decentralized government or a larger local government. Our instrumental variable estimates suggest that a mandatory budget referendum reduces the size of canton spending between 13 and 19 percent. A 1 percent lower signature requirement for the initiative reduces canton spending by up to 2 percent.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the impact of national institutional arrangements, namely educational systems, and related modes of labour markets and welfare provisions, on the aggregate effectiveness of youth labour market integration in the new EU member states in comparison to the old EU countries.
Abstract: Theoretically, the central research question of this article pertains to the way in which national institutional arrangements, namely educational systems, and related modes of labour markets and welfare provisions, affect the aggregate effectiveness of youth labour market integration in the new EU member states in comparison to the old EU countries. The study utilizes the European Union Labour Force Survey 2004. Results of the cluster analysis provide substantial support for distinct patterns of labour market entry in terms of the stratification of labour market exclusion, downgrading risk and labour market mobility of LM entrants in different CEE countries. Furthermore, the article reveals also new aspects of labour market entry in the EU-15 countries while considering not only educational signalling but also the labour market flexibility dimension.
