Abstract: There are many technical situations, such as various biological or medical applications, in which a hydrophobic fluid must be encapsulated inside a hydrophilic polymer shell in the form of tiny microscopic pieces. A novel approach is presented, based on the co-electrospinning of the hydrophilic polymer melt (outside) and the hydrophobic fluid (inside), which results in beaded micro- and nanofibers, such that the hydrophobic fluid is efficiently encapsulated inside the beads. For the selected fluid couple, the low liquid–liquid surface tension and the high viscosity of the melt prevent the varicose break-up of inner fluid in the coaxial electrified jet until the very end of the co-electrospinning process. The resulting fibers present beads filled with the hydrophobic fluid, separated by a rather uniform distance whose length depends partially on the melt flow rate. The bead diameter grows with the inner flow rate, going from a monosized to a bisized distribution. In the case under study, the maximum relative (inner-to-outer) flow rate is one. The diameter of the solid fibers between beads scales well with existing theories for simple electrospinning.

Abstract: Direct torque control (DTC) has been widely used as an alternative to traditional field-oriented control (FOC) methods for three-phase drives. The conventional DTC scheme has been successfully extended to multiphase drives in recent times, using hysteresis regulators to independently track the desired torque and flux in symmetrical five-phase induction machines (IMs). The fault-tolerant capability of multiphase drives is an interesting intrinsic advantage for safety-critical applications, where recent research has demonstrated the effectiveness of FOC schemes to perform ripple-free postfault operation. In spite of the utility of DTC methods in normal operation of the multiphase machine, no extension to manage the postfault operation of the drive is found in the literature. In this paper, a novel fault-tolerant DTC scheme is presented. The performance of the proposed method is experimentally validated in a five-phase IM drive considering an open-phase fault condition. Provided tests analyze steady and transient states, including the transition from pre- to postfault operation. Obtained results prove the interest of the proposal, which ensures the open-phase fault-tolerant capability of DTC-controlled five-phase IM drives.

Abstract: The prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP) in Europe has been reported to affect 61% of individuals and 14% of teeth, and increase with age. Likewise, the prevalence of root canal treatment (RCT) in Europe is estimated to be around 30-50% of individuals and 2-9% of teeth with radiographic evidence of chronic persistent AP in 30-65% of root filled teeth (RFT). AP is not only a local phenomenon and for some time the medical and dental scientific community have analysed the possible connection between apical periodontits and systemic health. Endodontic medicine has developed, with increasing numbers of reports describing the association between periapical inflammation and systemic diseases. The results of studies carried out both in animal models and humans are not conclusive, but suggest an association between endodontic variables, that is AP and RCT, and diabetes mellitus (DM), tobacco smoking, coronary heart disease and other systemic diseases. Several studies have reported a higher prevalence of periapical lesions, delayed periapical repair, greater size of osteolityc lesions, greater likelihood of asymptomatic infections and poorer prognosis for RFT in diabetic patients. On the other hand, recent studies have found that a poorer periapical status correlates with higher HbA1c levels and poor glycaemic control in type 2 diabetic patients. However, there is no scientific evidence supporting a causal effect of periapical inflammation on diabetes metabolic control. The possible association between smoking habits and endodontic infection has also been investigated, with controversial results. The aim of this paper was to review the literature on the association between endodontic variables and systemic health (especially DM and smoking habits).
