TL;DR: This article analyzed sedimentary charcoal records to show that the changes in fire regime over the past 21,000 yrs are predictable from changes in regional climates and showed that fire increases monotonically with changes in temperature and peaks at intermediate moisture levels.

Reconstructions of biomass burning from sediment-charcoal records to improve data–model comparisons
Jennifer R. Marlon,Ryan Kelly,Anne-Laure Daniau,Boris Vannière,Mitchell J. Power,Patrick J. Bartlein,Philip E. Higuera,Olivier Blarquez,Simon Brewer,Tim Brücher,Angelica Feurdean,Graciela Gil Romera,Virginia Iglesias,S. Yoshi Maezumi,Brian I. Magi,Colin J. Courtney Mustaphi,Tonishtan Zhihai +16 more
TL;DR: The Global Charcoal Database version 3 (GCDv3) as discussed by the authors contains 736 charcoal records (57 more than in version 2) and provides new 1000-year and 22'000-year trends and gridded biomass burning reconstructions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Control of the multimillennial wildfire size in boreal North America by spring climatic conditions
Adam A. Ali,Adam A. Ali,Olivier Blarquez,Olivier Blarquez,Martin P. TL;DR: A Holocene reconstruction of fire regime is presented, combining lacustrine charcoal analyses with past drought and fire-season length simulations to elucidate the mechanisms linking long-term fire regime and climatic changes and indicated that an earlier termination of the fire season induced a sharp decrease in FF and BB.
