Journal ArticleDOI

The interleukin-6 receptor as a target for prevention of coronary heart disease: a mendelian randomisation analysis.

Daniel I. Swerdlow, +115 more
- 31 Mar 2012 -
TL;DR: IL6R blockade could provide a novel therapeutic approach to prevention of coronary heart disease that warrants testing in suitably powered randomised trials and could help to validate and prioritise novel drug targets or to repurpose existing agents and targets for new therapeutic uses.
Journal ArticleDOI

Human gene for physical performance

TL;DR: It is shown that a polymorphism in the gene encoding angiotensin-converting enzyme is associated with elite endurance performance among high-altitude mountaineers and after physical training, repetitive weight-lifting is improved eleven-fold in individuals homozygous for the ‘insertion’ allele.
Journal ArticleDOI

Apo B versus cholesterol in estimating cardiovascular risk and in guiding therapy: report of the thirty-person/ten-country panel.

TL;DR: Evidence from fundamental, epidemiological and clinical trial studies indicates that apo B is superior to any of the cholesterol indices to recognize those at increased risk of vascular disease and to judge the adequacy of lipid‐lowering therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Association of angiotensin-converting enzyme gene I/D polymorphism with change in left ventricular mass in response to physical training.

TL;DR: Exercise-induced LV growth in young males is strongly associated with the ACE I/D polymorphism, and the prevalence of electrocardiographically defined LVH rose significantly only among those of DD genotype.
