Abstract: Ultra low power communication mechanisms are essential for future Internet of Things deployments. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is one promising candidate for such deployments. We study the energy consumption of BLE by measuring real devices with a power monitor and derive models of the basic energy consumption behavior observed from the measurement results. We investigate also the overhead of Ipv6-based communication over BLE, which is relevant for future IoT scenarios. We contrast our results by performing similar measurements with ZigBee/802.15.4 devices. Our results show that when compared to ZigBee, BLE is indeed very energy efficient in terms of number of bytes transferred per Joule spent. In addition, IPv6 communication energy overhead remains reasonable. We also point out a few specific limitations with current stack implementations and explain that removing those limitations could improve energy utility significantly.

Abstract: In this paper we present Netalyzr, a network measurement and debugging service that evaluates the functionality provided by people's Internet connectivity. The design aims to prove both comprehensive in terms of the properties we measure and easy to employ and understand for users with little technical background. We structure Netalyzr as a signed Java applet (which users access via their Web browser) that communicates with a suite of measurement-specific servers. Traffic between the two then probes for a diverse set of network properties, including outbound port filtering, hidden in-network HTTP caches, DNS manipulations, NAT behavior, path MTU issues, IPv6 support, and access-modem buffer capacity. In addition to reporting results to the user, Netalyzr also forms the foundation for an extensive measurement of edge-network properties. To this end, along with describing Netalyzr 's architecture and system implementation, we present a detailed study of 130,000 measurement sessions that the service has recorded since we made it publicly available in June 2009.

Abstract: As a kind of traction device, interior permanent-magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs) are widely used in modern electric vehicles. This paper performs a design and comparative study of IPMSMs with different rotor topologies (spoke-type PMs, tangential-type PMs, U-shape PMs, and V-shape PMs). The research results indicate that the IPMSM with V-shape PMs is more satisfying with comprehensive consideration. Furthermore, the IPMSM with V-shape PMs is investigated in detail. The influences of geometrical parameters (magnetic bridge and angle between the two V-shape PMs under each pole, etc.) on the performances of V-shape motor are evaluated based on finite-element method (FEM). For accurate research, the effects of saturation, cross-magnetization, and the change in PM flux linkage on d - and q -axis inductances are considered. The back-electromotive force (EMF), flux leakage coefficient, average torque, torque ripple, cogging torque, power per unit volume, power factor, and flux-weakening ability are investigated, respectively. The experimental results verify the validity and accuracy of the process presented in this paper.

Abstract: Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs)-narrow stripes of graphene-have emerged as promising building blocks for nanoelectronic devices. Recent advances in bottom-up synthesis have allowed production of atomically well-defined armchair GNRs with different widths and doping. While all experimentally studied GNRs have exhibited wide bandgaps, theory predicts that every third armchair GNR (widths of N=3m+2, where m is an integer) should be nearly metallic with a very small bandgap. Here, we synthesize the narrowest possible GNR belonging to this family (five carbon atoms wide, N=5). We study the evolution of the electronic bandgap and orbital structure of GNR segments as a function of their length using low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy and density-functional theory calculations. Already GNRs with lengths of 5 nm reach almost metallic behaviour with ∼100 meV bandgap. Finally, we show that defects (kinks) in the GNRs do not strongly modify their electronic structure.
