High-accuracy determination of the relative full energy peak efficiency curve of a coaxial HPGe detector in the energy range 700-1300 keV

Abstract: A method for the high-accuracy determination of the relative full energy peak efficiency is established. Radionuclides that emit at least two gamma-ray lines for which the relative intensity can be found (from the decay scheme) to much better than ±0.1% were used as calibration standards. Specifically, the 889 and 1120 keV lines of 46Sc, the 983 and 1312 keV lines of 48Sc, the 1173 and 1332 keV lines of 60Co, and the 702 and 871 keV lines of 94Nb were implemented. The high-accuracy calibration was taken to extend from the lowest line of 94Nb at 702 keV to the highest line of 60Co at 1332 keV. An analytical expression, based on linear least-squares fitting, was developed to describe the behavior of the relative efficiency curve in that energy range. As a result, the ability of predicting relative full energy peak efficiencies to within ±0.1% (over most of the energy range) was demonstrated. The presented method is applicable in any measurement that requires the minimum calibration bias in the determination of reaction rate ratios. Applications in Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) and in nuclear reactor dosimetry represent examples of such situations.

Culture, Colleagues, and Leadership: The Academic Department as a Location of Faculty Experiences in Liberal Arts Colleges.

Abstract: Abstract:Learning more about the role of the academic department in LACs may improve faculty selection, development, support, and retention. Knowledge based on research about other institution types cannot be assumed to be generalizable to LACs. We know little about departmental contexts of faculty work in liberal arts colleges (LACs). The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to understand the department as an organizational context of faculty work in LACs, relying on the concept of positive organizational behavior. Findings from analysis of interview data from 55 liberal arts faculty members highlight the influence of three areas—culture, colleagues, and leadership.

Perceptions of fairness in the justice system: A cross-cultural comparison

Abstract: Research comparing the adversarial and inquisitorial justice systems has consisted primarily of American participants reading descriptions of each system in their "pure" form, rather than descriptions that allow for the flexibility with which these systems are actually employed. In this study, participants from the Netherlands and the United States read short, realistic descriptions of each system and answered questions about the fairness of both procedures. Results indicated that while the adversarial system was rated significantly higher on the likelihood that all evidence will be presented, and the likelihood that both the victim and the defendant will get an opportunity to voice their cases, people showed a clear preference for their own system. This bias toward one justice system over another may be due to the cultural values reflected in each system.

Teaching recursion using fractals in Prolog

Abstract: Recursion has traditionally been a difficult concept for students to understand, both as a control structure and as an analytical tool. This paper explores recursion using Prolog (whose predominate control structure is recursion) and through fractals which possess a visually recursive form. We discuss several simple Turbo Prolog programs which demonstrate recursion graphically and whose resultant figures are fractals whose recursive nature is particularly easy to analyze in the Turbo Prolog environment.
