TL;DR: A discrete-event simulator that tracks the blood glucose level of a person in response to a timed sequence of diet and exercise activities, CarbMetSim provides broad flexibility to configure the insulin production ability, the average flux along various metabolic pathways and the impact of insulin resistance on different aspects of carbohydrate metabolism.
Abstract: This paper describes CarbMetSim, a discrete-event simulator that tracks the blood glucose level of a person in response to a timed sequence of diet and exercise activities. CarbMetSim implements broader aspects of carbohydrate metabolism in human beings with the objective of capturing the average impact of various diet/exercise activities on the blood glucose level. Key organs (stomach, intestine, portal vein, liver, kidney, muscles, adipose tissue, brain and heart) are implemented to the extent necessary to capture their impact on the production and consumption of glucose. Key metabolic pathways (glucose oxidation, glycolysis and gluconeogenesis) are accounted for in the operation of different organs. The impact of insulin and insulin resistance on the operation of various organs and pathways is captured in accordance with published research. CarbMetSim provides broad flexibility to configure the insulin production ability, the average flux along various metabolic pathways and the impact of insulin resistance on different aspects of carbohydrate metabolism. The simulator does not yet have a detailed implementation of protein and lipid metabolism.

TL;DR: The authors conducted a content-analysis of the websites of 100 institutional members of the Council of Undergraduate Research in order to examine the relationship between messages communicated on websites as compared to messages expressed within institutional procedures and policies.
Abstract: We conducted a content-analysis of the websites of 100 institutional members of the Council of Undergraduate Research in order to examine the relationship between messages communicated on websites as compared to messages expressed within institutional procedures and policies. Findings show that public research institutions were more likely than baccalaureate institutions to have an Office of Undergraduate Research. Further incentives and supports provided by such offices are predominantly directed to students. Lastly, our analysis of promotion and tenure policies reveals that only 14 institutions out of the 100 in our sample explicitly mentioned mentoring undergraduate researchers in the evaluation criteria for faculty members. We offer implications for research and practice.

TL;DR: In this paper, 20 females who had previously participated in a similar experiment some six to eight months prior to the present study were recalled in order to test the stability of the present tactual form discrimination task and to determine the effects of brief applications of vibration in tactful form discrimination.
Abstract: Twenty females, who had previously participated in a similar experiment some six to eight months prior to the present study, were recalled in order to test the stability of the present tactual form discrimination task and to determine the effects of brief applications of vibration in tactful form discrimination. The discrimination measure was found to be remarkably stable and vibration reduced the number of errors made in form discrimination.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors consider an efficient, or socially optimal, spectrum sharing that consists of three objectives: full (quantitative) utilization, effective (qualitative) utilisation, and zero interference.
Abstract: It is widely recognized that the wireless spectrum is a scarce and limited resource and that the present practice of static spectrum allocation and exclusive licensing is inefficient. The proposed approaches generally either focus on maximization of spectrum utilization or profit maximization of individuals (such as the government or users). In this paper, we consider an efficient, or socially optimal, spectrum sharing that consists of three objectives: full (quantitative) utilization, effective (qualitative) utilization, and zero interference. Through a comparative study of these models using suggested objective criteria, we show a hybrid model consisting of a dynamic spectrum market and dynamic spectrum access supported by cognitive radio technologies that can achieve the social optimum. The dynamic spectrum market enabled by a benevolent social coordinator has fundamental differences from existing dynamic market models in that primary licensed user is not involved in the process of allocating underused spectrum. Moreover, the motivation of social coordinator is to reach socially optimal allocation of spectrum resources rather than to maximize profit or revenue of individuals.
