Stably Just Infinite Rings

Abstract: We study just infinite algebras which remain so upon extension of scalars by arbitrary field extensions. Such rings are called stably just infinite. We show that just infinite rings over algebraically closed fields are stably just infinite provided that the ring is either right noetherian or countably generated over a large field. We give examples to show that, over countable fields, a just infinite algebra which is either affine or non-noetherian need not remain just infinite under extension of scalars. We also give a concrete classification of PI stably just infinite rings and give two characterizations of non-PI stably just infinite rings in terms of Martindale's extended center.

Subject anxiety and recall of prose read under delayed auditory feedback.

Abstract: A short passage of prose was read under delayed auditory feedback (DAF) by 24 high MAS and 24 low MAS Ss, while an equal number of Ss read the passage under immediate auditory feedback (IAF). Reading times were recorded and oral recalls were taken immediately following the reading and 24 hr. later. Reading time was significantly shorter for IAF readings. Under DAF, high MAS Ss read significantly faster than low MAS Ss, although no time difference was found for IAF presentation. Both immediate and delayed recalls were poorer following DAF reading, but the effect of S anxiety did not significantly affect retention of this verbal task.

Video Killed the Writing Assignment

Abstract: An introductory Astronomy survey course is often taken to satisfy a college graduation requirement for non-science majors at colleges around the United States. In this course, material that can be broadly categorized into topics related to "the sky", "the Solar System", "the Galaxy", and "cosmology" is discussed. Even with the wide variety of topics in these categories, though, students may not be 100% interested in the course content, and it is almost certain that a specific topic about which a student wishes to learn is not covered. To at least partly address these issues, to appeal to all of the students in this class, and to allow students to explore topics of their choice, a video project has been assigned to students at Albion College as a class activity. In this assignment, students are asked to create a video of a famous (or not) astronomer, astronomical object or discovery, or telescope observatory to present to the class. Students work in pairs to create a video that is original and imaginative and includes accurate scientific content. For this project, then, students use a familiar technology and exercise their creativity while learning a little (or a lot of) science along the way. Herein data on types and topics of videos, examples of videos, assignment requirements and grading rubrics, lessons learned, and student comments will be discussed and shared.
