Abstract: We review recent work demonstrating consistent context effects during emotion perception. Visual scenes, voices, bodies, other faces, cultural orientation, and even words shape how emotion is perceived in a face, calling into question the still-common assumption that the emotional state of a person is written on and can be read from the face like words on a page. Incorporating context during emotion perception appears to be routine, efficient, and, to some degree, automatic. This evidence challenges the standard view of emotion perception represented in psychology texts, in the cognitive neuroscience literature, and in the popular media and points to a necessary change in the basic paradigm used in the scientific study of emotion perception.

Abstract: We examine the role of spin-orbit coupling in the electronic structure of $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$, in which Ru ions in $4{d}^{5}$ configuration form a honeycomb lattice. Our x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements at the Ru $L$ edges exhibit distinct spectral features associated with the presence of substantial spin-orbit coupling, as well as an anomalously large branching ratio. Furthermore the measured optical spectra can be described very well with first-principles electronic structure calculations obtained by taking into account both spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations. We propose that $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$ is a spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator, and that the bond-dependent Kitaev interaction may be important for understanding magnetism of this compound.

Abstract: In an era of pressure toward evidence-based health care, we are witnessing a new enthusiasm for qualitative metasynthesis as an enterprise distinct from conventional literature reviews, secondary analyses, and the many other scholarly endeavors with which it is sometimes confused. This article represents the reflections of five scholars, each ofwhom has authored a distinct qualitative metasynthesis strategy. By providing the reader a glimpse into the tradition of their various qualitative metasynthesis projects, these authors offer a finely nuanced examination of the tensions between comparison and integration, deconstruction and synthesis, and reporting and integration within the metasynthesis endeavor. In so doing, they account for many of the current confusions about representation and generalization within the products of these inquiries. Through understanding the bases of their unique angles of vision, the reader is invited to engage in their commitment to scholarly integrity and intellectual credibility in this emerging methodological challenge.

Abstract: High-level synthesis systems start with an abstract behavioral specification of a digital system and find a register-transfer level structure that realizes the given behavior. The various tasks involved in developing a register-transfer level structure from an algorithmic level specification are described. In particular, it is shown how the high-level synthesis task can be decomposed into a number of distinct but not independent subtasks. The techniques that have been developed for solving those subtasks are presented. Areas related to high-level synthesis that are still open problems are examined. >
