Abstract: The incidence and prevalence of diabetes mellitus were determined in 3733 Pima Indians aged 5 years or over by periodic examinations over a 10-year period. The examinations included modified glucose tolerance tests and medical record review. The age-sex adjusted prevalence rate was 21.1% (SE = 0.7%). Prevalence was low in childhood and plateaued at 40--50% in adults over 35 years of age. The age-sex adjusted incidence rate of 26.5 cases/1000 person-years (SE = 1.9) is the highest reported diabetes incidence known to the authors. Incidence increased from low levels in childhood to peak at age 40 (males) or 50 (females) and then gradually declined. Diabetes incidence was 19 times that in the predominantly white population of Rochester, Minnesota (95% confidence interval, 16 to 22 times). The high incidence rate was found despite using a more stringent diagnostic criterion than customarily employed, and was shown not be due to biased follow-up of subjects.

Abstract: The use of metal ion-induced polymerizations of a ditopic ligand offers a facile route to the preparation of organic/inorganic hybrid materials. Such metallo-supramolecular polymers potentially offer the functionality of the metal ion along with the processibility of a polymer. We report, herein, the preparation of gellike metallo-supramolecular polymers prepared from a monomer unit, which consists of a 2,6-bis-(benzimidazolyl)-4-hydroxypyridine unit attached to either end of a polyether chain, mixed with a transition metal ion (e.g., Co(II) or Zn(II)) and a small percentage of a lanthanoid metal (e.g., La(III), Eu(III)). Such materials show dramatic reversible responses to a variety of stimuli, including thermal, mechanical, chemo, and photo. The nature of the response can be controlled by the nature of the combination of transition metal ion and lanthanide metal ion used.

Abstract: Background Since the mid-1980s, increasing numbers of children with birth weights under 750 g have survived to school age. Methods We matched a regional cohort of 68 surviving children born from 1982 through 1986 with birth weights under 750 g (mean, 670 g; gestational age, 25.7 weeks) with 65 children weighing 750 to 1499 g at birth and 61 children born at term. Growth, neurosensory status, and functioning at school age in the three groups were compared. Associations of biologic and social risk factors with major developmental outcomes were examined by means of logistic-regression analyses. Results Children with birth weights under 750 g were inferior to both comparison groups in cognitive ability, psychomotor skills, and academic achievement. They had poorer social skills and adaptive behavior and more behavioral and attention problems.
