Abstract: Column-oriented database systems (column-stores) have attracted a lot of attention in the past few years. Column-stores, in a nutshell, store each database table column separately, with attribute values belonging to the same column stored contiguously, compressed, and densely packed, as opposed to traditional database systems that store entire records (rows) one after the other. Reading a subset of a table's columns becomes faster, at the potential expense of excessive disk-head seeking from column to column for scattered reads or updates. After several dozens of research papers and at least a dozen of new column-store start-ups, several questions remain. Are these a new breed of systems or simply old wine in new bottles? How easily can a major row-based system achieve column-store performance? Are column-stores the answer to effortlessly support large-scale data-intensive applications? What are the new, exciting system research problems to tackle? What are the new applications that can be potentially enabled by column-stores? In this tutorial, we present an overview of column-oriented database system technology and address these and other related questions.

Abstract: Improved host I/O performance and availability of a storage array during rebuild is obtained by prioritizing I/O requests. In one embodiment, rebuild I/O requests are given priority over host I/O requests when the storage array is close to permanently losing data (for example, failure of one more particular disk in the storage array would result in data loss). Rebuild I/O requests continue to have priority over host I/O requests until the storage array is no longer close to permanently losing data, at which point host I/O requests are given priority over rebuild I/O requests.

Abstract: A computer network management software agent which includes the ability for users to add new user defined management objects. A user editable text file defines object identifications, object types, and the path and name of associated executable software. A user can then invoke user defined executable software at a managed node by sending a network command and a user defined associated object identifier to the agent in the managed node. Data can be sent between a user and user defined executable software. A timeout feature generates an error if commands are not completed within a user defined time.

Abstract: Shown is a method and system for provisioning a target computer with an operating system, which calls for booting the target computer in a pre-operating system environment, collecting configuration information for the target computer, and transmitting the configuration information to a predetermined server. The approach shown also provides for searching a database in the server for a pre-existing operating system image corresponding to the configuration information from the target computer. If a corresponding operating system image is found, then the present approach involves transferring the pre-existing operating system image to the target computer and installing the pre-existing operating system image on the target computer.

Abstract: Fractional-N frequency synthesis using a phase locked loop (PLL) is considered. Advances in oversampling A/D conversion technology are incorporated into fractional-N synthesis, allowing the spectrum of error energy to be shaped so that fractional synthesis error energy is pushed away from the carrier. Based on this new technology, a CMOS integrated fractional-N divider was successfully developed. A complete fractional-N PLL was constructed utilizing only a CMOS divider, a dual modulus prescaler, a simple loop filter, and a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). The resulting PLL exhibits no fractional spurs. >
