01 Jul 1986TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a pen body construction that includes multiple ink storage compartments communicating with a multi-orifice printhead, and these compartments are adapted to receive sections of ink-storage foam.
Abstract: The novel pen body construction described herein includes multiple ink storage compartments communicating with a multi-orifice printhead, and these compartments are adapted to receive sections of ink-storage foam. Preferably, this foam is a reticulated polyurethane foam of controlled porosity and capalarity and is especially well suited for storing different ink colors, such as cyan, magenta and yellow. However, single compartment black ink storage is also within the scope of this invention.

01 Jun 1990TL;DR: This paper presents the results of the investigation of code positioning techniques using execution profile data as input into the compilation process to reduce the overhead of the instruction memory hierarchy.
Abstract: This paper presents the results of our investigation of code positioning techniques using execution profile data as input into the compilation process. The primary objective of the positioning is to reduce the overhead of the instruction memory hierarchy. After initial investigation in the literature, we decided to implement two prototypes for the Hewlett-Packard Precision Architecture (PA-RISC). The first, built on top of the linker, positions code based on whole procedures. This prototype has the ability to move procedures into an order that is determined by a “closest is best” strategy. The second prototype, built on top of an existing optimizer package, positions code based on basic blocks within procedures. Groups of basic blocks that would be better as straight-line sequences are identified as chains. These chains are then ordered according to branch heuristics. Code that is never executed during the data collection runs can be physically separated from the primary code of a procedure by a technique we devised called procedure splitting. The algorithms we implemented are described through examples in this paper. The performance improvements from our work are also summarized in various tables and charts.

28 Dec 2009TL;DR: Extreme Binning is presented, a scalable deduplication technique for non-traditional backup workloads that are made up of individual files with no locality among consecutive files in a given window of time.
Abstract: Data deduplication is an essential and critical component of backup systems. Essential, because it reduces storage space requirements, and critical, because the performance of the entire backup operation depends on its throughput. Traditional backup workloads consist of large data streams with high locality, which existing deduplication techniques require to provide reasonable throughput. We present Extreme Binning, a scalable deduplication technique for non-traditional backup workloads that are made up of individual files with no locality among consecutive files in a given window of time. Due to lack of locality, existing techniques perform poorly on these workloads. Extreme Binning exploits file similarity instead of locality, and makes only one disk access for chunk lookup per file, which gives reasonable throughput. Multi-node backup systems built with Extreme Binning scale gracefully with the amount of input data; more backup nodes can be added to boost throughput. Each file is allocated using a stateless routing algorithm to only one node, allowing for maximum parallelization, and each backup node is autonomous with no dependency across nodes, making data management tasks robust with low overhead.

01 Jun 1986TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the relationship between inheritance and encapsulation and develop requirements for full support of encapsulation with inheritance, and propose a framework for supporting inheritance in object-oriented programming.
Abstract: Object-oriented programming is a practical and useful programming methodology that encourages modular design and software reuse. Most object-oriented programming languages support data abstraction by preventing an object from being manipulated except via its defined external operations. In most languages, however, the introduction of inheritance severely compromises the benefits of this encapsulation. Furthermore, the use of inheritance itself is globally visible in most languages, so that changes to the inheritance hierarchy cannot be made safely. This paper examines the relationship between inheritance and encapsulation and develops requirements for full support of encapsulation with inheritance.
