Abstract: We show that thin sheets under boundary confinement spontaneously generate a universal self-similar hierarchy of wrinkles. From simple geometry arguments and energy scalings, we develop a formalism based on wrinklons, the localized transition zone in the merging of two wrinkles, as building blocks of the global pattern. Contrary to the case of crumpled paper where elastic energy is focused, this transition is described as smooth in agreement with a recent numerical work [R.D. Schroll, E. Katifori, and B. Davidovitch, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 074301 (2011)]. This formalism is validated from hundreds of nanometers for graphene sheets to meters for ordinary curtains, which shows the universality of our description. We finally describe the effect of an external tension to the distribution of the wrinkles.

Abstract: We study models of a quadrotor UAV. These models include various aerodynamic effects of the propellers and their interactions with the motion of the rigid body of the UAV. Two main assumptions are formulated: the twisting of the propellers is such that the local angle of attack is constant along the blades in stationary flight, and, secondly, that the local induced velocity is also constant along the blades. Under these assumptions (which correspond to an optimal hovering rotor), we conclude that the flexibility of the propellers plays an important role in the dynamics of the UAV (including the effects of the vertical location of the center of gravity), and that it is interesting to account for it when designing a closed loop controller.

Abstract: Engineering is evolving in the same way than society is doing. Nowadays, data is acquiring a prominence never imagined. In the past, in the domain of materials, processes and structures, testing machines allowed extract data that served in turn to calibrate state-of-the-art models. Some calibration procedures were even integrated within these testing machines. Thus, once the model had been calibrated, computer simulation takes place. However, data can offer much more than a simple state-of-the-art model calibration, and not only from its simple statistical analysis, but from the modeling and simulation viewpoints. This gives rise to the the family of so-called twins: the virtual, the digital and the hybrid twins. Moreover, as discussed in the present paper, not only data serve to enrich physically-based models. These could allow us to perform a tremendous leap forward, by replacing big-data-based habits by the incipient smart-data paradigm.

Abstract: Highly compacted sand–bentonite mixtures are often considered as possible engineered barriers in deep high-level radioactive waste disposals. In situ, the saturation of these barriers from their initially unsaturated state is a complex hydro-mechanical coupled process in which temperature effects also play a role. The key parameter of this process is the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of the barrier. In this paper, isothermal infiltration experiments were conducted to determine the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity according to the instantaneous profile method. To do so, total suction changes were monitored at different locations along the soil specimen by using resistive relative humidity probes. Three constant-volume infiltration tests were conducted showing, unexpectedly, a decrease of the hydraulic conductivity during infiltration. One test performed under free-swell conditions showed the opposite and standard trend. These observations were interpreted in terms of microstructure changes during wetting, both under constant-volume and free-swell conditions.
