Evidence-based recommendations are developed to inform clinical decision-making in the management of thyroid nodules and differentiated thyroid cancer and represent, in the authors' opinion, contemporary optimal care for patients with these disorders.Abstract:
Background: Thyroid nodules are a common clinical problem, and differentiated thyroid cancer is becoming increasingly prevalent. Since the American Thyroid Association's (ATA's) guidelines for the management of these disorders were revised in 2009, significant scientific advances have occurred in the field. The aim of these guidelines is to inform clinicians, patients, researchers, and health policy makers on published evidence relating to the diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules and differentiated thyroid cancer. Methods: The specific clinical questions addressed in these guidelines were based on prior versions of the guidelines, stakeholder input, and input of task force members. Task force panel members were educated on knowledge synthesis methods, including electronic database searching, review and selection of relevant citations, and critical appraisal of selected studies. Published English language articles on adults were eligible for inclusion. The American College of Physicians Guideline Gr...read more

TL;DR: GAL-3-ICC represents the most suitable screening test-method to be applied on a large-scale basis in the diagnostic algorithm of indeterminate thyroid lesions and is one of the cheapest (113 USD) and easiest one to be performed in different clinical settings.

TL;DR: These guidelines are an educational tool designed to assist practitioners in providing appropriate radiologic care for patients and are not intended, nor should they be used, to establish a legal standard of care.

TSH measurement is not an appropriate screening test for autonomous functioning thyroid nodules: a retrospective study of 368 patients.
TL;DR: The data suggest that serum TSH is not an effective screening tool to diagnose AFTNs and should be considered before performing fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), as the reliability of FNAC in an unsuspected AFTN remains unclear.

TL;DR: Normal and neoplastic thyroid tissues could be discriminated from each other by different relative concentrations of several amino acids and lipids, as well as benign and malignant neoplasms, that differed in terms of a greater lactate and taurine and a lesser lipid choline, phosphocholine, myo- inositol, and scyllo-inositol levels in malignant samples.

Updates on the Management of Advanced, Metastatic, and Radioiodine Refractory Differentiated Thyroid Cancer.
TL;DR: Management of advanced thyroid cancer can be challenging but a multidisciplinary approach can significantly improve outcomes for this patient population, and two multi-kinase inhibitors showing an advantage in terms of progression-free survival are licensed for iodine refractory DTC.
