Abstract
Broadband wireless access systems deployed in residential and business environments are likely to face hostile radio propagation environments, with multipath delay spread extending over tens or hundreds of bit intervals. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) is a recognized multicarrier solution to combat the effects of such multipath conditions. This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions. SC radio modems with frequency domain equalization have similar performance, efficiency, and low signal processing complexity advantages as OFDM, and in addition are less sensitive than OFDM to RF impairments such as power amplifier nonlinearities. We discuss similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and present examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.

Precoded MIMO-SC-FDE and blind channel estimation

TL;DR: This paper considers designing precoding matrices and blind channel estimation algorithms for MIMO single carrier with frequency domain equalization (MIMO-SC-FDE) systems and designs several new precode matrices that will not affect the power of the precoded block.

Noise Whitening Decision Feedback Equalizer for SC-FDMA Receivers

TL;DR: This paper proposes an improved DFE scheme for SC-FDMA systems where a linear noise whitening filter is inserted before the decision device of the conventional D FE scheme, and compares the bit error rate performance of the proposed DFE schemes with the conventional equalizers.

Flexible Multi-Group Single-Carrier Modulation: Subcarrier Mapping and Power Allocation Optimization

TL;DR: This paper studies a multi- group single carrier modulation scheme, termed flexible multi-group single carrier (FMG-SC), which encapsulates both OFDM and SC-FDE as special cases, thus achieving more flexible rate-PAPR tradeoffs between them and greatly outperforms the existing single carrier frequency-division multiple access.

Novel Pilot Position Selection and Signal Reconstruction Methods for Frequency-Domain Pilot Multiplexing Techniques of SC-FDE

TL;DR: The relationship between the interference pattern and the loss of equally spaced tones is discovered and by exploiting this relationship, a novel PPS method and a novel SR method are proposed which dispenses with a priori knowledge of the channel statistics and imposes very low computational cost to the transmitter.

Random Access Identifier-Linked Receiver Beamforming with Transmitter Filtering in TDD-Based Random Access

TL;DR: Computer simulation results show that the proposed novel random access identifier (RAID)-linked receiver beamforming method greatly improves the accuracy of active RAID detection and channel estimation and results in lower error rates than that for the conventional method performing channel estimation at each antenna in a massive MIMO environment.

Analysis and Simulation of a Digital Mobile Channel Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

TL;DR: The analysis and simulation of a technique for combating the effects of multipath propagation and cochannel interference on a narrow-band digital mobile channel using the discrete Fourier transform to orthogonally frequency multiplex many narrow subchannels, each signaling at a very low rate, into one high-rate channel is discussed.

BER sensitivity of OFDM systems to carrier frequency offset and Wiener phase noise

TL;DR: In this contribution the transmission of M-PSK and M-QAM modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signals over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is considered and the degradation of the bit error rate is evaluated.
