The proportion of new cases of HIV dementia with a CD4 count in a higher range since 1996 may be increasing, and the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) may be responsible.Abstract:
This study examined the temporal trends in the incidence rates of HIV dementia, cryptococcal meningitis, toxoplasmosis, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, and CNS lymphoma from January 1990 to December 1998 in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study. The incidence rates for HIV dementia, cryptococcal meningitis, and lymphoma decreased following the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The proportion of new cases of HIV dementia with a CD4 count in a higher range (i.e., 201 to 350) since 1996 may be increasing.read more

TL;DR: The results are consistent with an increased risk of neuroAIDS after initiating lopinavir compared with efavirenz, but temporal changes in prescribing trends and confounding by indication could explain the findings.
Novel roles of cell cycle regulator E2F1 in the CNS: Implications for synaptic damage in HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders
TL;DR: This dissertation work provided data to suggest that E2F1 does not mediate neuronal damage through its classical functions as a transcriptional regulator of apoptotic and cell cycle-related genes in vitro model of HIV-associated toxicity and that E1F1 is regulated by unique mechanisms in the CNS.

Non-neuronal interactions in HIV-1-associated dementia
TL;DR: Understanding the complete network of secretory molecules produced by activated nonneuronal cells in HAD is pivotal for deciphering the mechanism of neuropathogenesis of the disease, and ultimately reaching the goal of protecting the brain or reversing the disease process in the infected human host.
