Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: MR Imaging of Liver Proton Density Fat Fraction to Assess Hepatic Steatosis

TLDR
MR imaging-PDFF showed promise for assessment of hepatic steatosis grade in patients with NAFLD, and was significantly correlated with histologic steatotic grade.
Abstract
MR imaging with proton density fat fraction (PDFF) permitted high overall accuracy with moderate sensitivity and high specificity for classification of dichotomized steatosis grade, and these results support the conduct of further studies to help validate MR imaging–PDFF as a biomarker of hepatic steatosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Clinical strategy of diagnosing and following patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease based on invasive and noninvasive methods

TL;DR: This review will highlight recent studies on the diagnosis and staging of NAFLD based on invasive (liver biopsy) or noninvasive (biomarker, scoring systems, US-based elastography and MRElastography) methods.

Shared genetic effects between hepatic steatosis and fibrosis: A prospective twin study

TL;DR: Genes involved with steatosis pathogenesis may also be involved with fibrosis pathogenesis and the proportion of phenotypic variance between two phenotypes accounted for by additive genetic effects and individual‐specific environmental effects is estimated.

Standardized Approach for ROI-Based Measurements of Proton Density Fat Fraction and R2* in the Liver

TL;DR: Averaging largest-fit ROIs over the nine Couinaud segments resulted in the narrowest limits of agreement (LOA) for liver PDFF and R2* measurements in both cohorts, suggesting clinicians and researchers should sample as much area of the liver as possible using multiple large ROIs.

Diagnostic accuracy of CE-CT, MRI and FDG PET/CT for detecting colorectal cancer liver metastases in patients considered eligible for hepatic resection and/or local ablation

TL;DR: MRI performed significantly better than both CE-CT and combined FDG-PET/CT for detection of CRLM in consecutive patients eligible for local treatment irrespective of prior chemotherapy or local treatment.

Quantitative ultrasound approaches for diagnosis and monitoring hepatic steatosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

TL;DR: Several different emerging quantitative ultrasound-based approaches used for detection and quantification of hepatic steatosis in patients at risk for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease are reviewed.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis: a proposal for grading and staging the histological lesions

TL;DR: There are no systems for grading necroinflammatory activity or for staging fibrosis as exist for various other forms of chronic liver disease and this study proposes a grading and staging system that reflects the unique histological features of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

Sampling variability of liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C.

TL;DR: It is suggested that a length of at least 25 mm is necessary to evaluate fibrosis accurately with a semiquantitative score, because variability in the distribution of fibrosis within the liver is a major limitation when using more accurate methods such as automated image analysis.

Sampling variability of liver biopsy in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

TL;DR: Histologic lesions of NASH are unevenly distributed throughout the liver parenchyma; therefore, sampling error of liver biopsy can result in substantial misdiagnosis and staging inaccuracies.
