Abstract: Objective: We investigated the association between glucose tolerance status defined by a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and the development of dementia. Methods: A total of 1,017 community-dwelling dementia-free subjects aged ≥60 years who underwent the OGTT were followed up for 15 years. Outcome measure was clinically diagnosed dementia. Results: The age- and sex-adjusted incidence of all-cause dementia, Alzheimer disease (AD), and vascular dementia (VaD) were significantly higher in subjects with diabetes than in those with normal glucose tolerance. These associations remained robust even after adjustment for confounding factors for all-cause dementia and AD, but not for VaD (all-cause dementia: adjusted hazard ratio [HR] = 1.74, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.19 to 2.53, p = 0.004; AD: adjusted HR = 2.05, 95% CI = 1.18 to 3.57, p = 0.01; VaD: adjusted HR = 1.82, 95% CI = 0.89 to 3.71, p = 0.09). Moreover, the risks of developing all-cause dementia, AD, and VaD significantly increased with elevated 2-hour postload glucose (PG) levels even after adjustment for covariates, but no such associations were observed for fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels: compared with those with 2-hour PG levels of Conclusions: Our findings suggest that diabetes is a significant risk factor for all-cause dementia, AD, and probably VaD. Moreover, 2-hour PG levels, but not FPG levels, are closely associated with increased risk of all-cause dementia, AD, and VaD.

Abstract: Ionic conduction of oxygen in the ceria-samarium oxide system was investigated as a function of temperature, partial pressure of oxygen and the oxide composition, together with its crystal structure, density and defect structure. The ionic conductivity of (CeO2)1−x(SmO1.5)x was the highest in ZrO2-, ThO2- and CeO2-based oxide systems. The system CeO2-SmO1.5 consisted of the solid solution with a fluorite structure atx<50 at.%. The ionic transference number was nearly unity between 600 and 900°C. With an increase in Sm2O3 content, the ionic conductivity gradually decreased due to a decrease in mobility of oxygen ions. The samarium oxide-doped ceria was less reducible than pure and alkaline earth oxide-doped ceria.

Abstract: IMOGOLITE, a gel-like hydrous aluminium silicate identified in several volcanic ash soils and other weathered pyroclastic deposits, has been shown by electron microscopy1 to consist of bundles of fine tubes, each about 20 A in diameter. Electron diffraction patterns2,3 indicate a repeat distance along the tube axis of 8.4 A and a repeat distance perpendicular to this axis of 22 to 23 A, corresponding to centre-to-centre tube separations. X-ray diffraction patterns are more diffuse and differ principally in that the highest spacing observed for desiccated material is 18.4 A. Two empirical formulae have been proposed: 1.5SiO2·Al2O3·2.5H20 (ref. 2) and 1.1SiO2·Al2O3·2.3−2.8H2O (ref. 3); these two papers also advance tentative structures which assign the 8.4 A repeat distance to a gibbsite-like chain or ribbon, although they differ in the nature of the postulated silicate anion. Neither accounts for the cylindrical structure later established.
