Abstract: Financial forecasting is an example of a signal processing problem which is challenging due to small sample sizes, high noise, non-stationarity, and non-linearity. Neural networks have been very successful in a number of signal processing applications. We discuss fundamental limitations and inherent difficulties when using neural networks for the processing of high noise, small sample size signals. We introduce a new intelligent signal processing method which addresses the difficulties. The method proposed uses conversion into a symbolic representation with a self-organizing map, and grammatical inference with recurrent neural networks. We apply the method to the prediction of daily foreign exchange rates, addressing difficulties with non-stationarity, overfitting, and unequal a priori class probabilities, and we find significant predictability in comprehensive experiments covering 5 different foreign exchange rates. The method correctly predicts the direction of change for the next day with an error rate of 47.1%. The error rate reduces to around 40% when rejecting examples where the system has low confidence in its prediction. We show that the symbolic representation aids the extraction of symbolic knowledge from the trained recurrent neural networks in the form of deterministic finite state automata. These automata explain the operation of the system and are often relatively simple. Automata rules related to well known behavior such as tr end following and mean reversal are extracted.

Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the physiological basis of the environmental tolerances of the microorganisms in groups of the xerotolerant yeasts, moulds, and the halophilic algae, which represents some species of the genus Dunaliella. The chapter reviews the subject of microbial water stress with emphasis on physicochemical aspects of the problem. The chapter complements and emphasizes on biological and regulatory aspects. It is largely confined to eukaryotes. This chapter also discusses microbial activity under the former type of condition that is in a concentrated solution. There are several parameters by which the amount of thermodynamically available water in a solution can be described. Biologists have commonly used osmotic pressure, water activity, and water potential. Microbiologists have tended to use the first two, and plant physiologists have tended to use osmotic pressure and water potential. Water activity lacks the mechanistic overtones of osmotic pressure, and it has some practical advantages over water potential. The advantages include the relative ease by which it can be experimentally determined and mathematically manipulated.

Abstract: The durability and reactivity of catalysts can be effectively and precisely controlled through the careful design and engineering of their surface structures and morphologies. Herein, we develop a novel “adsorption–calcination–reduction” strategy to synthesize spinel transitional metal oxides with a unique necklace-like multishelled hollow structure exploiting sacrificial templates of carbonaceous microspheres, including NiCo2O4 (NCO), CoMn2O4, and NiMn2O4. Importantly, benefiting from the unique structures and reduction treatment to offer rich oxygen vacancies, the unique reduced NCO (R-NCO) as a bifunctional electrocatalyst exhibits the dual characteristics of good stability as well as high electrocatalytic activity for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). At 1.61 V cell voltage, a 10 mA cm–2 water splitting current density is obtained from the dual-electrode, alkaline water electrolyzer. Abstract: Materials exhibiting high energy/power density are currently needed to meet the growing demand of portable electronics, electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage devices. The highest energy densities are achieved for fuel cells, batteries, and supercapacitors, but conventional dielectric capacitors are receiving increased attention for pulsed power applications due to their high power density and their fast charge-discharge speed. The key to high energy density in dielectric capacitors is a large maximum but small remanent (zero in the case of linear dielectrics) polarization and a high electric breakdown strength. Polymer dielectric capacitors offer high power/energy density for applications at room temperature, but above 100 °C they are unreliable and suffer from dielectric breakdown. For high-temperature applications, therefore, dielectric ceramics are the only feasible alternative. Lead-based ceramics such as La-doped lead zirconate titanate exhibit good energy storage properties, but their toxicity raises concern over their use in consumer applications, where capacitors are exclusively lead free. Lead-free compositions with superior power density are thus required. In this paper, we introduce the fundamental principles of energy storage in dielectrics. We discuss key factors to improve energy storage properties such as the control of local structure, phase assemblage, dielectric layer thickness, microstructure, conductivity, and electrical homogeneity through the choice of base systems, dopants, and alloying additions, followed by a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art. Finally, we comment on the future requirements for new materials in high power/energy density capacitor applications.

Abstract: The public key encryption with keyword search (PEKS) scheme, proposed by Boneh, Di Crescenzo, Ostrovsky and Persiano, enables one to search for encrypted keywords without compromising the security of the original data. In this paper, we address two important issues of a PEKS scheme, "removing secure channel" and "refreshing keywords", which have not been considered in Boneh et al.'s paper. We point out the inefficiency of the original PEKS scheme due to the use of the secure channel. We resolve this problem by constructing an efficient PEKS scheme that removes a secure channel. We then argue that care must be taken when keywords are used frequently in the PEKS scheme as this situation might contradict the security of PEKS.
