Abstract: To characterize the physical demands associated with on-the-job use of current firefighting equipment and the performance of essential firefighting operations, an initial task analysis of all firefighting operations was followed by an in-depth physical and physiological characterization of those tasks deemed to be physically demanding. The most commonly encountered applications of strength and endurance were lifting and carrying objects (up to 80 lbs), pulling objects (up to 135 lbs), and working with objects in front of the body (up to 125 lbs). The most demanding firefighting operations required a mean VO2 of 41.5 ml/kg.min-1 with peak lactate concentrations of 6 to 13.2 mM. Ninety percent of the demanding firefighting operations that were studied required a mean VO2 of 23 ml/kg.min-1. These aerobic energy requirements corresponded to 85 and 50% VO2max, respectively. Therefore a minimum VO2max standard for firefighter applicants of 45 ml/kg.min-1 is recommended.

Abstract: This study used some of the data from the BBC Internet study to assess the universality of sex related spatial competencies, as these are described in the terms of Silverman and Eals’ (1992) hunter-gatherer theory of human spatial sex differences. As predicted, men scored significantly higher than women on a test of three-dimensional mental rotations in all seven ethnic groups and 40 countries used. Close to prediction, women scored significantly higher than men on a test of object location memory in all seven ethnic groups and 35 of the 40 countries. The data were discussed in terms of their implications for research approaches in this area and a paradigm for future studies was proposed, based on the interaction of innate and environmental factors in the ontogenetic development of spatial sex differences.

Abstract: Arithmetic Asian options are difficult to price and hedge as they do not have closed-form analytic solutions. The main theoretical reason for this difficulty is that the payoff de? pends on the finite sum of correlated lognormal variables, which is not lognormal and for which there is no recognizable probability density function. We use elementary techniques to derive the probability density function of the infinite sum of correlated lognormal ran? dom variables and show that it is reciprocal gamma distributed, under suitable parameter restrictions. A random variable is reciprocal gamma distributed if its inverse is gamma dis? tributed. We use this result to approximate the finite sum of correlated lognormal variables and then value arithmetic Asian options using the reciprocal gamma distribution as the state-price density function. We thus obtain a closed-form analytic expression for the value of an arithmetic Asian option, where the cumulative density function of the gamma distri? bution, G(d) in our formula, plays the exact same role as N(d) in the Black-Scholes/Merton formula. In addition to being theoretically justified and exact in the limit, we compare our method against other algorithms in the literature and show our method is quicker, at least as accurate, and, in our opinion, more intuitive and pedagogically appealing than any pre? viously published result, especially when applied to high yielding currency options.

Abstract: This report presents an assessment made by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Gene-Tox Program's Work Group on mammalian cytogenetics of the clastogenic effects of chemicals in in vivo and in vitro mammalian cell assays. This assessment is based on information provided by the Environmental Mutagen Information Center, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, with the proviso that the experimental protocol used in these papers was adjudged to be acceptable by standards outlined by the Work Group. Some data were accepted as "qualitative only" because the protocol used was fairly close to that proposed as suitable. Using these criteria, 177 papers were selected for review. 6 assays were reviewed: bone marrow (32 papers, 31 chemicals), spermatogonial (10 papers, 10 chemicals), spermatocyte (25 papers, 25 chemicals), oocyte or early embryo (18 papers, 19 chemicals), in vitro cell culture (30 papers, 66 chemicals), and leukocyte (66 papers, 53 chemicals). Each assay was considered separately, and comparisons were then made between them for their similarities or differences in producing a positive or negative clastogenic effect of a particular chemical or chemical class. A large proportion of the available cytogenetic data was not suitable for inclusion in the final data base because of poor experimental design or unsatisfactory reporting of the information. It was not possible to recommend any one assay for determining potential clastogenicity because each had its own particular advantages and limitations and provided unique information. For demonstrating in vivo effects, the bone-marrow assay is probably the simplest and most economical. If only in vitro exposures were considered, leukocytes or cultured mammalian cell lines would be suitable. However, there are advantages to using leukocytes because they are a synchronous population, at least through their cell division, and because of the ready availability of human cells. In general, there was good agreement between clastogenicity and carcinogenicity.
