TL;DR: There were important differences in therapist stance, activity, and technique that were consistent with theoretical prescription, but patient characteristics within sessions were quite similar, which may help explain the role of nonspecific factors associated with nondifferential treatment outcome in brief therapy.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors cast doubt on the assumption that mandatory psychotherapeutic treatments are effective in reducing future incidents of violence between spouses, concluding that the incremental benefit of court-ordered treatment over the deterrent effects of traditional criminal justice system remedies is unclear.
