Astrocytes Protect Neurons in the Hippocampal CA3 Against Ischemia by Suppressing the Intracellular Ca2+ Overload.

TL;DR: Astrocytes in the hippocampal CA3 region exert neuroprotective effects following transient forebrain ischemia and act by suppressing the intracellular Ca2+ overload, which will most likely provide a new therapeutic strategy for brain ischemic diseases, targeted to astrocyte.
Journal ArticleDOI

Treadmill exercise attenuates cerebral ischaemic injury in rats by protecting mitochondrial function via enhancement of caveolin-1.

TL;DR: Treadmill exercise protected mitochondrial integrity and inhibited the endogenous mitochondrial apoptosis pathway, and the damage of cerebral ischaemia was alleviated in rats through enhancement of caveolin-1 by treadmill exercise.

Iron Pathophysiology in Stroke.

TL;DR: Recent research progress in iron pathophysiology following cerebral stroke is discussed, focusing molecular regulation of iron metabolism and potential treatment targets.
Journal ArticleDOI

Meta-analysis study to evaluate the association of MTHFR C677T polymorphism with risk of ischemic stroke.

TL;DR: A meta-analysis of existing published studies found that there was a 30% higher risk of Ischemic stroke in the presence of MTHFR C667T mutation compared to controls, and Publication bias in the study was analyzed using funnel plot which revealed that only 7 studies out of the 72 contributed to publication bias.

Atherosclerosis — An Inflammatory Disease

TL;DR: Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease as discussed by the authors, and it is a major cause of death in the United States, Europe, and much of Asia, despite changes in lifestyle and use of new pharmacologic approaches to lower plasma cholesterol concentrations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Direct Proinflammatory Effect of C-Reactive Protein on Human Endothelial Cells

TL;DR: The hypothesis that CRP may play a direct role in promoting the inflammatory component of atherosclerosis and present a potential target for the treatment of Atherosclerosis is supported.
Journal ArticleDOI

p53 Has a Direct Apoptogenic Role at the Mitochondria

TL;DR: Evidence that p53 translocation to the mitochondria occurs in vivo in irradiated thymocytes is provided and it is shown that the p53 protein can directly induce permeabilization of the outer mitochondrial membrane by forming complexes with the protective BclXL and Bcl2 proteins, resulting in cytochrome c release.
Journal ArticleDOI

Glutamate-mediated astrocyte-neuron signalling.

TL;DR: Astrocytes regulate neuronal calcium levels through the calcium-dependent release of glutamate, and an NMDA (N-methyl-d-aspartate) receptor-mediated increase in neuronal calcium is demonstrated.
