Journal ArticleDOI

Biosynthesis of ascorbic acid by extant actinopterygians

TL;DR: Polypterus senegalus, the longnose gar Lepisosteus osseus and the bowfin Amia calva had gulonolactone oxidase activity in the kidney and thus can synthesize ascorbic acid de novo and suggested homology of the character throughout fishes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Neuroprotection by Melatonin on Mercury Induced Toxicity in the Rat Brain

TL;DR: Treatment with the antioxidant melatonin prevented mercury exerted toxicity due to its antioxidant property and produced neuroprotection against mercury poisoning in rats, which was supported by ultrastructural studies carried out in the brain.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of ascorbic acid deficiency on adrenal mitochondrial hydroxylations in guinea pigs.

TL;DR: The effect of ascorbic acid deficiency on adrenal hydroxylation of cholesterol and deoxycorticosterone in guinea pigs was studied and it was concluded that the level of asCorbate in the adrenals might be of some importance for the capacity to convert cholesterol into pregnenolone.

Effect of Cigarette Smoking on Lipids and Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction

TL;DR: Cardiac markers, lipid profile, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidants were more significantly altered in smokers than non-smokers in t he M I gr oup, suggesting that the at herogenic effects of smoking are mediated in pa rt by free radical damage to lipids and possible b reakdown of antioxidant status.
