This paper provided a conceptual analysis of feedback and reviewed the evidence related to its impact on learning and achievement, and suggested ways in which feedback can be used to enhance its effectiveness in classrooms.Abstract:
Feedback is one of the most powerful influences on learning and achievement, but this impact can be either positive or negative. Its power is frequently mentioned in articles about learning and teaching, but surprisingly few recent studies have systematically investigated its meaning. This article provides a conceptual analysis of feedback and reviews the evidence related to its impact on learning and achievement. This evidence shows that although feedback is among the major influences, the type of feedback and the way it is given can be differentially effective. A model of feedback is then proposed that identifies the particular properties and circumstances that make it effective, and some typically thorny issues are discussed, including the timing of feedback and the effects of positive and negative feedback. Finally, this analysis is used to suggest ways in which feedback can be used to enhance its effectiveness in classrooms.read more

Effectiveness of virtual reality-based instruction on students' learning outcomes in K-12 and higher education
TL;DR: Results suggest games show higher learning gains than simulations and virtual worlds, and for simulation studies, elaborate explanation type feedback is more suitable for declarative tasks whereas knowledge of correct response is more appropriate for procedural tasks.

Rethinking models of feedback for learning: the challenge of design
David Boud,Elizabeth Molloy +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors develop and analyse two models of feedback: the first is based on the origins of the term in the disciplines of engineering and biology, and the second draws on ideas of sustainable assessment.

Sex Differences in Learned Helplessness: II. The Contingencies of Evaluative Feedback in the Classroom and III. An Experimental Analysis
TL;DR: The authors found that teachers attributed the boys' failures to lack of motivation significantly more than they did the girls' failures, and that negative evaluation of girls' performance referred almost exclusively to intellectual inadequacies, whereas 45% of boys' work-related criticism referred to nonintellectual aspects.

Feedback in written instruction: The place of response certitude
TL;DR: In this article, a model is developed that applies concepts from servocontrol theory to the feedback sequence, and three experiments support the major predictions of the control model, which is used as a conceptual guide for the following sections.
