Journal ArticleDOI

A simple and distinctive microbiota associated with honey bees and bumble bees

TL;DR: It is found that most bee species lack phylotypes that are the same or similar to those typical of A. mellifera, rejecting the hypothesis that this dietary transition was symbiont‐dependent and potentially key to the maintenance of a more consistent gut microbiota.
Journal ArticleDOI

Inclusive fitness theory and eusociality

Patrick Abbot, +137 more
- 24 Mar 2011 -
TL;DR: It is argued that inclusive fitness theory has been of little value in explained the natural world, and that it has led to negligible progress in explaining the evolution of eusociality, but these arguments are based upon a misunderstanding of evolutionary theory and a misrepresentation of the empirical literature.
Journal ArticleDOI

Finding the missing honey bee genes: Lessons learned from a genome upgrade

Christine G. Elsik, +51 more
- 30 Jan 2014 -
TL;DR: Improved honey bee genome assembly with a new gene annotation set and a number of genes similar to that of other insect genomes are reported, contrary to what was suggested in OGSv1.0.
Journal ArticleDOI

The genomes of two key bumblebee species with primitive eusocial organization

Ben M. Sadd, +154 more
- 24 Apr 2015 -
TL;DR: Overall, gene repertoires suggest that the route to advanced eusociality in bees was mediated by many small changes in many genes and processes, and not by notable expansion or depauperation.
