Abstract: Agriculture and development transform forest ecosystems to human-modified landscapes. Decades of research in ecology have generated myriad concepts for the appropriate management of these landscapes. Yet, these concepts are often contradictory and apply at different spatial scales, making the design of biodiversity-friendly landscapes challenging. Here, we combine concepts with empirical support to design optimal landscape scenarios for forest-dwelling species. The supported concepts indicate that appropriately sized landscapes should contain ≥ 40% forest cover, although higher percentages are likely needed in the tropics. Forest cover should be configured with c. 10% in a very large forest patch, and the remaining 30% in many evenly dispersed smaller patches and semi-natural treed elements (e.g. vegetation corridors). Importantly, the patches should be embedded in a high-quality matrix. The proposed landscape scenarios represent an optimal compromise between delivery of goods and services to humans and preserving most forest wildlife, and can therefore guide forest preservation and restoration strategies.

Abstract: In an ad-hoc network, all communication is done over wireless media, without the help of wired base stations. While many routing protocols have been developed to find and maintain routes based on a best-effort service model, quality-of-service (QoS) routing in an ad-hoc network is difficult because the network topology may change constantly and the available state information for routing is inherently imprecise. In this paper, we discuss how to support QoS routing in OLSR (optimized link state routing protocol, one of the routing protocols under study by the IETF MANET Working Group). We develop heuristics that allow OLSR to find the maximum bandwidth path, show through simulation that these heuristics do improve OLSR in the static network case, and finally, we prove that for our ad-hoc network model, two of the heuristics are indeed optimal (i.e., guarantee that the highest-bandwidth path between any two nodes is found).

Abstract: This paper proposes a methodology and instrumentation infrastructure toward the reverse engineering of UML (Unified Modeling Language) sequence diagrams from dynamic analysis. One motivation is, of course, to help people understand the behavior of systems with no (complete) documentation. However, such reverse-engineered dynamic models can also be used for quality assurance purposes. They can, for example, be compared with design sequence diagrams and the conformance of the implementation to the design can thus be verified. Furthermore, discrepancies can also suggest failures in meeting the specifications. Due to size constraints, this paper focuses on the distribution aspects of the methodology we propose. We formally define our approach using metamodels and consistency rules. The instrumentation is based on aspect-oriented programming in order to alleviate the effort overhead usually associated with source code instrumentation. A case study is discussed to demonstrate the applicability of the approach on a concrete example
