TL;DR: In this paper, a vision for critical data studies is presented, based on the initial provocations of Dalton and Thatcher (2014), which is divided into three sections: the first describes the recent step change in the production and employment of data and how data and databases are being reconceptualised, and the second forwards the notion of a data assemblage that encompasses all of the technological, political, social and economic apparatuses and elements that constitutes and frames the generation, circulation and deployment of data.
Abstract: The growth of big data and the development of digital data infrastructures raises numerous questions about the nature of data, how they are being produced, organized, analyzed and employed, and how best to make sense of them and the work they do. Critical data studies endeavours to answer such questions. This paper sets out a vision for critical data studies, building on the initial provocations of Dalton and Thatcher (2014). It is divided into three sections. The first details the recent step change in the production and employment of data and how data and databases are being reconceptualised. The second forwards the notion of a data assemblage that encompasses all of the technological, political, social and economic apparatuses and elements that constitutes and frames the generation, circulation and deployment of data. Drawing on the ideas of Michel Foucault and Ian Hacking it is posited that one way to enact critical data studies is to chart and unpack data assemblages. The third starts to unpack some the ways that data assemblages do work in the world with respect to dataveillance and the erosion of privacy, profiling and social sorting, anticipatory governance, and secondary uses and control creep. The paper concludes by arguing for greater conceptual work and empirical research to underpin and flesh out critical data studies.

Abstract: Using $13.3\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collision data taken in the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S\ensuremath{-}4S)$ region with the CLEO III detector at the CESR collider, a search has been made for the new resonance $Y(4260)$ recently reported by the BABAR Collaboration. The production of $Y(4260)$ in initial state radiation (ISR), and its decay into ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}J/\ensuremath{\psi}$, are confirmed. A good quality fit to our data is obtained with a single resonance. We determine $M(Y(4260))=({4284}_{\ensuremath{-}16}^{+17}(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4(\mathrm{syst}))\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^{2}$, $\ensuremath{\Gamma}(Y(4260))=({73}_{\ensuremath{-}25}^{+39}(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5(\mathrm{syst}))\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^{2}$, and ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{ee}(Y(4260))\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathcal{B}(Y(4260)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}J/\ensuremath{\psi})=({8.9}_{\ensuremath{-}3.1}^{+3.9}(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.8(\mathrm{syst}))\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{eV}/{c}^{2}$.

Abstract: The cryosphere is defined by the presence of frozen water in its many forms: glaciers, ice caps, ice sheets, snow, permafrost, and river and lake ice. In the extended Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region, including the Pamirs, Tien Shan and Alatua, the cryosphere is a key freshwater resource, playing a vital and significant role in local and regional hydrology and ecology. Industry, agriculture, and hydroelectric power generation rely on timely and sufficient delivery of water in major river systems; changes in the cryospheric system may thus pose challenges for disaster risk reduction in the extended HKH region.

Abstract: The authors survey the current status of light-meson spectroscopy, beginning with a general introduction to meson spectroscopy and its importance in understanding the physical states of quantum chromodynamics. Phenomenological models of hadron spectroscopy are described with particular emphasis on the constituent-quark model and the qualitative features it predicts for the meson spectrum. The authors next discuss expectations for hadrons lying outside the quark model, such as hadron states with excited gluonic degrees of freedom. These states include so-called hybrids and glueballs, as well as multiquark states. The established meson states are compared to the quark-model predictions and most meson states are found to be well described by the quark model. However, a number of states in the light-quark sector do not fit in well, suggesting the existence of hadronic states with additional degrees of freedom. The review ends with a brief description of future directions in meson spectroscopy.
