Abstract: Background Patient crowding and boarding in Emergency Departments (EDs) impair the quality of care as well as patient safety and satisfaction. Improved timing of inpatient discharges could positively affect ED boarding, and this hypothesis can be tested with computer modeling. Study Objective Modeling enables analysis of the impact of inpatient discharge timing on ED boarding. Three policies were tested: a sensitivity analysis on shifting the timing of current discharge practices earlier; discharging 75% of inpatients by 12:00 noon; and discharging all inpatients between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Methods A cross-sectional computer modeling analysis was conducted of inpatient admissions and discharges on weekdays in September 2007. A model of patient flow streams into and out of inpatient beds with an output of ED admitted patient boarding hours was created to analyze the three policies. Results A mean of 38.8 ED patients, 22.7 surgical patients, and 19.5 intensive care unit transfers were admitted to inpatient beds, and 81.1 inpatients were discharged daily on September 2007 weekdays: 70.5%, 85.6%, 82.8%, and 88.0%, respectively, occurred between noon and midnight. In the model base case, total daily admitted patient boarding hours were 77.0 per day; the sensitivity analysis showed that shifting the peak inpatient discharge time 4 h earlier eliminated ED boarding, and discharging 75% of inpatients by noon and discharging all inpatients between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. both decreased boarding hours to 3.0. Conclusion Timing of inpatient discharges had an impact on the need to board admitted patients. This model demonstrates the potential to reduce or eliminate ED boarding by improving inpatient discharge timing in anticipation of the daily surge in ED demand for inpatient beds.

Abstract: Arabidopsis thaliana contains two salicylic acid (SA) glucosyltransferase enzymes designated UGT74F1 and UGT74F2. UGT74F1 forms only SA 2-O-beta-D-glucose (SAG), while UGT74F2 forms both SAG and the SA glucose ester (SGE). In an attempt to determine the in vivo role of each SA glucosyltransferase (SAGT), the metabolism of SA in ugt74f1 and ugt74f2 mutants was examined and compared with that of the wild-type. The three major metabolites formed in wild-type Arabidopsis included SAG, SGE, and 2,5-dihydroxbenzoic acid 2-O-beta-D-glucose (DHB2G). This is the first description of DHB2G as a major metabolite of SA in plants. The major metabolites of SA formed in ugt74f1 mutants were SGE, SAG and 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid 5-O-beta-D-glucose (DHB5G). DHB5G was not formed in the wild-type plants. SAG and DHB2G were the main metabolites of SA in ugt74f2 mutants. The ugt74f2 mutant was unable to form SGE. Only SGE could be detected during in vitro SAGT assays of untreated wild-type and ugt74f1 mutants. This activity was because of constitutive UGT74F2 activity. Both SGE and SAG could be formed during in vitro assays of SA-pretreated wild-type and ugt74f1 leaves. Neither SAG nor SGE could be detected during the in vitro SAGT assays of untreated ugt74f2 leaves. Only SAG was formed during the in vitro SAGT assays of SA-pretreated ugt74f2 leaves. The SAG formation was a result of the UGT74F1 activity. This work demonstrates that changes in the activity of either SAGT enzyme can have a dramatic effect on the metabolism of exogenously supplied SA in Arabidopsis.

Abstract: Purpose – The application of self‐service technology in transaction‐based e‐service (e.g. online financial services) creates a challenge for firms: what combination of features should they offer to satisfy needs from different customer segments? This paper seeks to address the above question by highlighting similarities and differences of consumer preferences among self‐service, hybrid service and professional service segments for online financial services.Design/methodology/approach – This study employs a web‐based discrete choice experiment, in which 1,319 consumers were offered different account alternatives, which include features for self‐service and professional assistance, price per transaction, and promotion offers.Findings – The results demonstrate that overall, consumer preferences for features of online financial services differ across segments. Abstract: This study profiles new Mainland Chinese entrepreneurs and their enterprises as well as explores the cultural and family forces shaping small- and medium-size enterprise development. The study uncovers entrepreneurial motives, demographic attributes, and the type of businesses being established. Family and enterprise relationships relating to financial investment and employment are also presented. The majority of enterprises were found to be closely held small businesses focused on the retail and technology sectors. The findings suggest that entrepreneurs are motivated by the need for independent-based achievement and continuous learning around a family focus. Family played an active role in enterprise formation and development in China. Entrepreneurs were found to rely on family members both to establish and develop their enterprises. The majority of the entrepreneurs surveyed employed at least one family member on a full-time basis. Entrepreneurs were also found to use family finances as the primary source of start-up capital.
