TL;DR: A finite-horizon filter is designed such that an upper bound is guaranteed on the filtering error covariance at each time instant and the filter gain minimizing is subsequently obtained in terms of the solution to a set of recursive equations.

TL;DR: Tian et al. as discussed by the authors investigated the charge compensation mechanism and bulk and surface structural changes of LiNi0.6Mn 0.2Co0.2O2 were probed using synchrotron techniques and electron energy loss spectroscopy.
Abstract: Author(s): Tian, C; Nordlund, D; Xin, HL; Xu, Y; Liu, Y; Sokaras, D; Lin, F; Doeff, MM | Abstract: Nickel-rich layered materials are emerging as cathodes of choice for next-generation high energy density lithium ion batteries intended for electric vehicles. This is because of their higher practical capacities compared to compositions with lower Ni content, as well as the potential for lower raw materials cost. The higher practical capacity of these materials comes at the expense of shorter cycle life, however, due to undesirable structure and chemical transformations, especially at particle surfaces. To understand these changes more fully, the charge compensation mechanism and bulk and surface structural changes of LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 were probed using synchrotron techniques and electron energy loss spectroscopy in this study. In the bulk, both the crystal and electronic structure changes are reversible upon cycling to high voltages, whereas particle surfaces undergo significant reduction and structural reconstruction. While Ni is the major contributor to charge compensation, Co and O (through transition metal-oxygen hybridization) are also redox active. An important finding from depth-dependent transition metal L-edge and O K-edge X-ray spectroscopy is that oxygen redox activity exhibits depth-dependent characteristics. This likely drives the structural and chemical transformations observed at particle surfaces in Ni-rich materials.

TL;DR: The results strongly indicate that living and working in indoor thermal environments for long periods of time affects people's physiological acclimatization, and it appears that long-term exposure to stable AC environments may weaken people's thermal adaptability.
Abstract: It has been reported previously that people who are acclimated to naturally ventilated (NV) environments respond to hot and warm environments differently than people who are acclimated to air-conditioned (AC) environments. However, it is not clear whether physiological acclimatization contributes to this discrepancy. To study whether living and working in NV or AC environments for long periods of time can lead to different types of physiological acclimatization, and whether physiological acclimatization has an important influence on people’s responses of thermal comfort, measurements of physiological reactions (including skin temperature, sweat rate, heart rate variability, and heat stress protein 70) and thermal comfort responses were conducted in a ‘heat shock’ environment (climate chamber) with 20 people (10 in the NV group and 10 in the AC group). The results showed that the NV group had a significantly stronger capacity for physiological regulation to the heat shock than the AC group. In other words, the NV group did not feel as hot and uncomfortable as the AC group did. These results strongly indicate that living and working in indoor thermal environments for long periods of time affects people’s physiological acclimatization. Also, it appears that long-term exposure to stable AC environments may weaken people’s thermal adaptability.
Practical Implications
This study examined the psychological and physiological differences of thermal adaptability of people used to air-conditioned environments and naturally ventilated environments. The results suggested that long-term exposure to stable air-conditioned environments may weaken people’s thermal adaptability. Therefore, it might be advantageous for people to spend less time in static air-conditioned environments; this is not only because of its possible deleterious impact on people’s physiological adaptability, but also because the air-conditioners’ high-energy consumption will contribute to the effects of global warming.

TL;DR: The proposed relationship between porous structure and waterproof/breathable property as one considerable principle is applicable to designing functional membranes with different levels of protective and comfortable performance.
Abstract: The demand of water-resistant and breathable materials applied to a separation medium and protective garments is steadily increasing. Typical approaches to obtain these functional materials are based on hydrophobic agents and porous substrates with small fiber diameter, tiny pore, and high porosity. However, a fluorinated hydrophobic finishing agent usually employed in providing effective waterproofness is limited with respect to their environmental persistence and toxic potential. Herein, with the aim to keep a balance between the water-resistance and breathability as well as mechanical properties, we fabricate a novel fluoride-free functional membrane by electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers modified with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). As determined by morphological, DSC, and FT-IR analyses, the curing reaction of PDMS macromolecules formed an abundance of hydrophobic adhesive structures, which improved the waterproof performance dramatically and imparted relative good breathability at the same t...

TL;DR: This paper presents a new “all-in-one” approach to joint optimization of product family and supply chain configuration that neglects the complex tradeoffs underlying two different decision making problems and fails to reveal the inherent coupling of PFC and SCC.
