TL;DR: The results suggest that mechanism b, not mechanism a, is operative for dye photodegradation occurring on the iron (hydr)oxides.
Abstract: Photoinduced organic oxidation with iron (hydr)oxides in aqueous suspension has been argued with respect to two principal mechanisms: (a) photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer within a surface complex and (b) semiconductor photocatalysis. In this work, the photodegradation of azo dye orange II with UV light (λ ≥ 320 nm) in the aerated aqueous suspensions of haematite, maghemite, magnetite, goethite, lepidocrocite, and feroxyhite at an initial pH of 6.5 has been examined. The results showed that (1) all of the catalysts were effective at initiating dye photodegradation but the iron oxides appeared to be more active than the iron hydroxides; (2) the photodissolution of different iron phases and the dye photolysis in the dissolved iron solutions were very slow; (3) the initial rate of dye loss was proportional to the initial amount of adsorption, implying dye photodegradation on the catalyst surface; and (4) upon addition of H2O2, AgNO3, and NaF to the suspension, the rate of dye photodegradation was...

TL;DR: In this article, a large-area, flexible, transparent, and long-lived polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with high flexibility and large area producibility were realized through a hydrogen-bonding and coassembly strategy.
Abstract: Polymer-based room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with high flexibility and large-area producibility are highly promising for applications in organic electronics. However, achieving such photophysical materials is challenging because of difficulties in populating and stabilizing susceptible triplet excited states at room temperature. Herein large-area, flexible, transparent, and long-lived RTP systems prepared by doping rationally selected organic chromophores in a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix were realized through a hydrogen-bonding and coassembly strategy. In particular, the 3,6-diphenyl-9H-carbazole (DPCz)-doped PVA film shows long-lived phosphorescence emission (up to 2044.86 ms) and a remarkable duration of afterglow (over 20 s) under ambient conditions. Meanwhile, the 7H-dibenzo[c,g]carbazole (DBCz)-doped PVA film exhibits high absolute luminance of 158.4 mcd m2 after the ultraviolet excitation source is removed. The RTP results not only from suppressing the nonradiative decay by abundant hydrogen-bonding interactions in the PVA matrix but also from minimizing the energy gap (ΔEST) between the singlet state and the triplet state through the coassembly effect. On account of the outstanding mechanical properties and the afterglow performance of these RTP materials, they were applied in the fabrication of flexible 3D objects with repeatable folding and curling properties. Importantly, the multichannel afterglow light-emitting diode arrays were established under ambient conditions. The present long-lived phosphorescent systems demonstrate a bright opportunity for the production of large-area, flexible, and transparent emitting materials.

TL;DR: Alternative operation methods including a fluctuation of anoxic, oxic, and anaerobic conditions were favorable for promoting the growth of diverse microbial populations in activated sludge systems.
Abstract: Activated sludge system is an important process of domestic and industrial wastewater treatment containing highly diverse microbial communities. In this study, high-throughput sequencing was applied to examine the microbial community composition and diversity of activated sludge samples from four full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Shanghai. A relationship between microbial communities and environmental variables was examined. Proteobacteria was the most dominant phylogenetic group, followed by Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. A total of 166 genera were commonly shared by all seven sludge samples, including Zoogloea, Dechloromonas, Thauera, Nitrospira, Arcobacter, etc. Besides these shared populations, certain unique bacterial populations were found abundant in individual sludge sample. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that influent COD and pH had the greatest influence on microbial community compositions, whereas dissolved oxygen (DO) exhibited the least influence. The operating process was likely to foster diversity of the microbial communities inhabiting the wastewater treatment facilities. Alternative operation methods including a fluctuation of anoxic, oxic, and anaerobic conditions were favorable for promoting the growth of diverse microbial populations in activated sludge systems.
