Abstract: Theoretical analysis of hypersonic boundary-layer receptivity to wall disturbances is conducted using a combination of asymptotic and numerical methods. Excitation of the second mode by distributed and local forcing on a flat-plate surface is studied under adiabatic and cooled wall conditions. Analysis addresses receptivity to wall vibrations, periodic suction/blowing, and temperature disturbances. A strong excitation occurs in local regions where forcing is in resonance with normal waves. It is shown that the receptivity function tends to infinity as the resonance point tends to the branch point of the discrete spectrum that is typical for boundary layers on cool surfaces. Asymptotic analysis resolves this singularity and provides the receptivity coefficient in the branch-point vicinity. Numerical results indicate extremely high receptivity to vibrations and suction/blowing in the vicinity of the branch point located near the lower neutral branch of the Mack second mode.

Abstract: The distribution of mitochondria is strictly controlled by the cell because of their vital role in energy supply, regulation of cytosolic Ca2+ concentration and apoptosis. We employed cultured mammalian CV-1 cells and Drosophila BG2-C2 neuronal cells with enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP)-tagged mitochondria to investigate the regulation of their movement and anchorage. We show here that lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) inhibits fast mitochondrial movements in CV-1 cells acting through the small GTPase RhoA. The action of RhoA is mediated by its downstream effectors: formin-homology family members mDia1 in mammalian cells and diaphanous in Drosophila. Overexpression of constitutively active mutant forms of formins leads to dramatic loss of mitochondrial motility and to their anchorage to actin microfilaments. Conversely, depletion of endogenous diaphanous protein in BG2-C2 cells by RNA interference (RNAi) stimulates the mitochondrial movement. These effects are not simply explained by increased cytoplasm viscosity resulting from an increased F-actin concentration since stimulators of Arp2/3-dependent actin polymerization and jasplakinolide do not cause inhibition. The observed effects are highly specific to mitochondria since perturbations of diaphanous or mDia1 have no effect on movement of other membrane organelles. Thus, mitochondrial movement is controlled by the small GTPase RhoA and this control is mediated by formins.

Abstract: We present an analytical model and three dimensional particle simulations of intense laser interaction with a cluster of overdense plasma. When laser intensity is above a critical value, it blows off all of electrons from the cluster and forms a non-neutral ion cloud. During the Coulomb explosion of the ion cloud, ions acquire their energy. Ion energy spectra are discussed in detail for different densities and sizes of clusters with various laser intensities. It is shown that ultra-fast ions are produced for relatively large clusters, and that the ion energy becomes three times greater than the maximum electrostatic potential energy of the ion cloud. The laser driven Coulomb explosion of a cluster may provide a new high energy ion source.
