04 Nov 1999TL;DR: In this paper, a plurality of decoders, each of which performs a different decoding method on one of the signal packets, are used to perform iterative decoding of a sequence of signal packets in accordance with a multi-component coding scheme.
Abstract: Apparatus for iterative decoding of a sequence of signal packets coded in accordance with a multi-component coding scheme. The apparatus includes a plurality of decoders (68, 70), each of which performs a respective different decoding method on one of the signal packets, such that the plurality of decoders operate substantially concurrently. Iterative decoding may be stopped if a predetermined threshold maximum number of iterations is reached, or if the previous two decoder iterations have satisfactory cyclic redundancy checks (CRC), or if the input frame buffer to the decoder is filled to within a predefined percentage of its storage capacity.

Abstract: An embodiment of a system for wirelessly charging a wrist-worn device may include a radio frequency (RF) charging energy generating element, and an antenna configured to radiate the RF charging energy, the antenna comprising a first coil and a second coil, the first coil and the second coil each comprising a plurality of windings, the windings of the first coil being wound in a direction opposite the direction of the windings of the second coil. An embodiment of a wrist-worn charge-receiving device may include an antenna coil adapted to receive radio frequency (RF) charging energy, the antenna coil comprising non-uniform windings; and a rechargeable power source coupled to the antenna coil, the antenna coil adapted to provide the RF charging energy to the rechargeable power source.

23 Apr 2004TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a method for supporting and using multiple communications channels corresponding to different transmit technologies and/or access technologies in parallel within a cell of a wireless communications system.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for supporting and using multiple communications channels corresponding to different transmit technologies and/or access technologies in parallel within a cell of a wireless communications system are described. Mobile nodes support multiple technologies and can switch between the technology being used at a particular point in time, e.g., from a first channel corresponding to a first technology to a second channel corresponding to a different technology which provides better transmission characteristics, e.g., a better perceived channel quality. Mobiles maintain at least two sets of channel quality information at any one point in time. Mobiles select the better channel and communicate the channel selection to the base station or communicate channel quality information for multiple channels to the base station and allow the base station to select the channel corresponding to the technology providing the better conditions for the mobile. Different mobiles in the same cell may support different technologies.

TL;DR: A novel range-free localization algorithm using expected hop progress (LAEP) to predict the location of any sensor in a WSN is proposed, based on an accurate analysis of hop progress in aWSN with randomly deployed sensors and arbitrary node density.
Abstract: Localization algorithm continues to be an important and challenging topic in today's wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In this paper, a novel range-free localization algorithm using expected hop progress (LAEP) to predict the location of any sensor in a WSN is proposed. This algorithm is based on an accurate analysis of hop progress in a WSN with randomly deployed sensors and arbitrary node density. By deriving the expected hop progress from a network model for WSNs in terms of network parameters, the distance between any pair of sensors can be accurately computed. Since the distance estimation is a key issue in localization systems for WSNs, the proposed range-free LAEP achieves better performance and less communication overhead as compared to some existent schemes like DV-Hop and RAW. In addition, we study the effect of anchor placement on the algorithm performance by deriving the corresponding mean position error range. Extensive simulations are performed and the results are observed to be in good agreement with the theoretical analysis.

TL;DR: A wideband space-time channel model is defined, which captures the multiple dependencies and variability in multicell system-wide operating environments and its implementation complexity is reasonable so it can be used in simulating large-scale systems.
Abstract: A wideband space-time channel model is defined, which captures the multiple dependencies and variability in multicell system-wide operating environments. The model provides a unified treatment of spatial and temporal parameters, giving their statistical description and dependencies across a large geographical area for three outdoor environments pertinent to third-generation cellular system simulations. Parameter values are drawn from a broad base of recently published wideband and multiple-antenna measurements. A methodology is given to generate fast-fading coefficients between a base station and a mobile user based on the summation of directional plane waves derived from the statistics of the space-time parameters. Extensions to the baseline channel model, such as polarized antennas, are given to provide a greater variety of spatial environments. Despite its comprehensive nature, the model's implementation complexity is reasonable so it can be used in simulating large-scale systems. Output statistics and capacities are used to illustrate the main characteristics of the model
