TL;DR: In this paper, a network interface is presented that receives packet data from a shared medium and accomplishes the signal processing required to convert the data packet to host computer formatted data separately from receiving the data packets.
Abstract: A network interface is presented that receives packet data from a shared medium and accomplishes the signal processing required to convert the data packet to host computer formatted data separately from receiving the data packet. The network interface receives the data packet, converts the analog signal to a digitized signal, and stores the resulting sample packet in a storage queue. An off-line processor, which may be the host computer itself, performs the signal processing required to interpret the sample packet. In transmission, the off-line process converts host-formatted data to a digitized version of a transmission data packet and stores that in a transmission queue. A transmitter converts the transmission data packet format and transmits the data to the shared medium.

TL;DR: A power management device useable in a mobile station includes a main processor configured to execute applications including signal processing applications and further configured to enter a sleep mode in response to predetermined criteria as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A power management device useable in a mobile station includes a main processor configured to execute applications including signal processing applications and further configured to enter a sleep mode in response to predetermined criteria. The device further includes a circuit configured to operate when the main processor is in the sleep mode comprising at least one of a low power processor and a sensor to monitor at least one of signals, commands, inputs, and changes in environment, the circuit waking up the main processor responsive to one of the low power processor and the sensor. The device may operate a method and may execute instructions based on a machine readable medium.

TL;DR: In this paper, a mobile telephone system employs a fleet of satellites and a set of gateway ground stations arranged around the globe for handling communications to and from mobile communication units such as mobile telephones.
Abstract: The mobile telephone system employs a fleet of satellites and a set of gateway ground stations arranged around the globe for handling communications to and from mobile communication units such as mobile telephones. Signals are transmitted between a subscriber unit and the nearest gateway via one or more of the satellites. The gateway system is configured to process telephone call connection requests from a mobile subscriber unit based upon the location of the subscriber unit. The system parses telephone numbers received from the subscriber unit based upon the parsing scheme of the locality in which the subscriber unit is located at the time the telephone call is placed. The system also identifies any emergency services numbers called, such as 911, and directs such calls to the nearest emergency services center to the current location of the subscriber unit. In another implementation, the system is configured to perform lawful intercept of telephone calls to or from a mobile subscriber unit based upon the location of the subscriber unit. The system determines whether law enforcement agencies have requested that telephone communications to or from a particular subscriber unit be intercepted and determines whether, based on the current location of the subscriber unit, the telephone communications can be permissibly intercepted. Thus, if the jurisdiction of a law enforcement agency to intercept a call is restricted to certain geographical areas, such a particular country, state or county, the system determines whether the subscriber unit is within that geographical area before performing the requested intercept.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors apply a rate assignment algorithm to individual base stations in a wireless communications system, where each base station performs rate assignment to mobile stations optimally, but independently of the other base stations.
Abstract: A method, and corresponding apparatus, applies to individual base stations in a wireless communications systems, where each base station performs rate assignment to mobile stations optimally, but independently of the other base stations. Different base stations affect each other through other cell interference, and continuously modify their reversed link rate assignment based on the other-cell interference received and the requested rates from the mobile stations. The base stations converge to a stable condition with uncoordinated optimizations. The optimizing technique maximizes total through put in each cell (maximizing rates) while maintaining interference to other cells at a minimum level, and being subject to at least some of the following constraints: mobile station's maximum transmit power, mobile station's requested rate, discrete set of possible rates, maximum rise-over-thermal interference at the base station, and minimum required received error per bit normalized for noise.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an approach for generating and exchanging information for distributed coverage optimization in wireless networks, where a communication is established with at least one external entity, and a coverage-related measurement is received from the external entity.
Abstract: The subject specification is directed towards generating and exchanging information for coverage optimization in wireless networks. Aspects are disclosed for facilitating a distributed coverage optimization. A communication is established with at least one external entity, and a coverage-related measurement is received from the at least one external entity. A coverage parameter is then self-optimized as a function of the coverage-related measurement.
