TL;DR: A comprehensive review of the domain of physical layer security in multiuser wireless networks, with an overview of the foundations dating back to the pioneering work of Shannon and Wyner on information-theoretic security and observations on potential research directions in this area.
Abstract: This paper provides a comprehensive review of the domain of physical layer security in multiuser wireless networks. The essential premise of physical layer security is to enable the exchange of confidential messages over a wireless medium in the presence of unauthorized eavesdroppers, without relying on higher-layer encryption. This can be achieved primarily in two ways: without the need for a secret key by intelligently designing transmit coding strategies, or by exploiting the wireless communication medium to develop secret keys over public channels. The survey begins with an overview of the foundations dating back to the pioneering work of Shannon and Wyner on information-theoretic security. We then describe the evolution of secure transmission strategies from point-to-point channels to multiple-antenna systems, followed by generalizations to multiuser broadcast, multiple-access, interference, and relay networks. Secret-key generation and establishment protocols based on physical layer mechanisms are subsequently covered. Approaches for secrecy based on channel coding design are then examined, along with a description of inter-disciplinary approaches based on game theory and stochastic geometry. The associated problem of physical layer message authentication is also briefly introduced. The survey concludes with observations on potential research directions in this area.

15 Oct 1987TL;DR: In this article, a multiple access, spread spectrum communication system and method for providing high capacity communications to, from, or between a plurality of system users, using code-division-spread-spectrum communication signals is presented.
Abstract: A multiple access, spread spectrum communication system and method for providing high capacity communications to, from, or between a plurality of system users, using code-division-spread-spectrum communication signals. The communication system uses means for providing marginal isolation between user communication signals. The marginal isolation is provided by generating simultaneous multiple steerable beams; using an omni-directional antenna with polarization enhancement; using power control devices to adjust the output power for user generated communication signals either in response to their input activity level, or in accordance with a minimum allowable power for maintaining a communication link. The communication system can also employ a means for transmitting a predetermined pilot chip sequence contiguous with the code-division-spread-spectrum communication signals. In further embodiments the communication system employs a plurality of user terminals linked to each other or to other services through one or more terrestrial or satellite repeaters. Multiple satellite repeaters are operable in a new communication mode to obtain further gains in signal isolation.

TL;DR: This work shows that the existing outer bounds can in fact be arbitrarily loose in some parameter ranges, and by deriving new outer bounds, it is shown that a very simple and explicit Han-Kobayashi type scheme can achieve to within a single bit per second per hertz of the capacity for all values of the channel parameters.
Abstract: The capacity of the two-user Gaussian interference channel has been open for thirty years. The understanding on this problem has been limited. The best known achievable region is due to Han-Kobayashi but its characterization is very complicated. It is also not known how tight the existing outer bounds are. In this work, we show that the existing outer bounds can in fact be arbitrarily loose in some parameter ranges, and by deriving new outer bounds, we show that a simplified Han-Kobayashi type scheme can achieve to within a single bit the capacity for all values of the channel parameters. We also show that the scheme is asymptotically optimal at certain high SNR regimes. Using our results, we provide a natural generalization of the point-to-point classical notion of degrees of freedom to interference-limited scenarios.

TL;DR: NVSim is developed, a circuit-level model for NVM performance, energy, and area estimation, which supports various NVM technologies, including STT-RAM, PCRAM, ReRAM, and legacy NAND Flash and is expected to help boost architecture-level NVM-related studies.
Abstract: Various new nonvolatile memory (NVM) technologies have emerged recently. Among all the investigated new NVM candidate technologies, spin-torque-transfer memory (STT-RAM, or MRAM), phase-change random-access memory (PCRAM), and resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) are regarded as the most promising candidates. As the ultimate goal of this NVM research is to deploy them into multiple levels in the memory hierarchy, it is necessary to explore the wide NVM design space and find the proper implementation at different memory hierarchy levels from highly latency-optimized caches to highly density- optimized secondary storage. While abundant tools are available as SRAM/DRAM design assistants, similar tools for NVM designs are currently missing. Thus, in this paper, we develop NVSim, a circuit-level model for NVM performance, energy, and area estimation, which supports various NVM technologies, including STT-RAM, PCRAM, ReRAM, and legacy NAND Flash. NVSim is successfully validated against industrial NVM prototypes, and it is expected to help boost architecture-level NVM-related studies.
