Abstract: Convolutional low-density parity-check (LDPC) ensembles, introduced by Felstrom and Zigangirov, have excellent thresholds and these thresholds are rapidly increasing functions of the average degree. Several variations on the basic theme have been proposed to date, all of which share the good performance characteristics of convolutional LDPC ensembles. We describe the fundamental mechanism that explains why “convolutional-like” or “spatially coupled” codes perform so well. In essence, the spatial coupling of individual codes increases the belief-propagation (BP) threshold of the new ensemble to its maximum possible value, namely the maximum a posteriori (MAP) threshold of the underlying ensemble. For this reason, we call this phenomenon “threshold saturation.” This gives an entirely new way of approaching capacity. One significant advantage of this construction is that one can create capacity-approaching ensembles with an error correcting radius that is increasing in the blocklength. Although we prove the “threshold saturation” only for a specific ensemble and for the binary erasure channel (BEC), empirically the phenomenon occurs for a wide class of ensembles and channels. More generally, we conjecture that for a large range of graphical systems a similar saturation of the “dynamical” threshold occurs once individual components are coupled sufficiently strongly. This might give rise to improved algorithms and new techniques for analysis.

Abstract: In November/2004, we witnessed the formation of the first worldwide effort to define a novel wireless air interface (i.e., MAC and PHY) standard based on Cognitive Radios (CRs): the IEEE 802.22 Working Group (WG). The IEEE 802.22 WG is chartered with the development of a CR-based Wireless Regional Area Network (WRAN) Physical (PHY) and Medium Access Control (MAC) layers for use by license-exempt devices in the spectrum that is currently allocated to the Television (TV) service. Since 802.22 is required to reuse the fallow TV spectrum without causing any harmful interference to incumbents (i.e., the TV receivers), cognitive radio techniques are of primary importance in order to sense and measure the spectrum and detect the presence/absence of incumbent signals. On top of that, other advanced techniques that facilitate coexistence such as dynamic spectrum management and radio environment characterization could be designed. In this paper, we provide a detailed overview of the 802.22 draft specification, its architecture, requirements, applications, and coexistence considerations. These not only form the basis for the definition of this groundbreaking wireless air interface standard, but will also serve as foundation for future research in the promising area of CRs.

Abstract: A compact and efficient optical system featuring planar multi-layered LED light source arrays concentrating their polarized or unpolarized output within a limited angular range. The optical system manipulates light emitted by a planar light emitters such as electrically-interconnected LED chips. Each light emitting region in the array is surrounded by reflecting side-walls whose output is processed by elevated prismatic films, polarization converting films, or both. The optical interaction between light emitters, reflecting sidewalls and the elevated prismatic films create overlapping virtual images between emitting regions that contribute to the greater optical uniformity. Practical illumination applications of such uniform light source arrays include compact LCD of DMD video image projectors, as well as general lighting, automotive lighting, and LCD backlighting.

The system includes circuitry responsive to the indication for coupling communications between the mobile user and the other system user via the new cell-site while the mobile user also remains in communication with the system user via the first cell-site. The system further includes apparatus responsive to the coupling of the communications between the mobile user and the other system user via the new cell-site for terminating the communications between the mobile user and another system user via cell-site with communications continuing between the mobile user and the system user via the new cell-site.
