Abstract: A facile, economical and effective method to produce hierarchically porous nitrogen-rich carbon (HPNC) from wheat straw has been reported. Acid pretreatment is introduced before KOH activation, and plays the role of promoting the formation of thinner pore walls. Without any N-doping, the N content is as high as 5.13%. The HPNC when used as an anode for Li-ion batteries exhibits a superior specific capacity of 1470 mA h g−1 at 0.037 A g−1, and possesses an ultrahigh rate capability of 344 mA h g−1 at 18.5 A g−1. Even at an extremely high current density of 37 A g−1, the reversible capacity is still as high as 198 mA h g−1.

Abstract: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a devastating form of retinal degeneration, with significant social and professional consequences. Molecular genetic information is invaluable for an accurate clinical diagnosis of RP due to its high genetic and clinical heterogeneity. Using a gene capture panel that covers 163 of the currently known retinal disease genes, including 48 RP genes, we performed a comprehensive molecular screening in a collection of 123 RP unsettled probands from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds, including 113 unrelated simplex and 10 autosomal recessive RP (arRP) cases. As a result, 61 mutations were identified in 45 probands, including 38 novel pathogenic alleles. Interestingly, we observed that phenotype and genotype were not in full agreement in 21 probands. Among them, eight probands were clinically reassessed, resulting in refinement of clinical diagnoses for six of these patients. Finally, recessive mutations in CLN3 were identified in five retinal degeneration patients, including four RP probands and one cone-rod dystrophy patient, suggesting that CLN3 is a novel non-syndromic retinal disease gene. Collectively, our results underscore that, due to the high molecular and clinical heterogeneity of RP, comprehensive screening of all retinal disease genes is effective in identifying novel pathogenic mutations and provides an opportunity to discover new genotype-phenotype correlations. Information gained from this genetic screening will directly aid in patient diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment, as well as allowing appropriate family planning and counseling.

Abstract: Tissue clearing technique enables visualization of opaque organs and tissues in 3-dimensions (3-D) by turning tissue transparent. Current tissue clearing methods are restricted by limited types of tissues that can be cleared with each individual protocol, which inevitably led to the presence of blind-spots within whole body or body parts imaging. Hard tissues including bones and teeth are still the most difficult organs to be cleared. In addition, loss of endogenous fluorescence remains a major concern for solvent-based clearing methods. Here, we developed a polyethylene glycol (PEG)-associated solvent system (PEGASOS), which rendered nearly all types of tissues transparent and preserved endogenous fluorescence. Bones and teeth could be turned nearly invisible after clearing. The PEGASOS method turned the whole adult mouse body transparent and we were able to image an adult mouse head composed of bones, teeth, brain, muscles, and other tissues with no blind areas. Hard tissue transparency enabled us to reconstruct intact mandible, teeth, femur, or knee joint in 3-D. In addition, we managed to image intact mouse brain at sub-cellular resolution and to trace individual neurons and axons over a long distance. We also visualized dorsal root ganglions directly through vertebrae. Finally, we revealed the distribution pattern of neural network in 3-D within the marrow space of long bone. These results suggest that the PEGASOS method is a useful tool for general biomedical research.

Abstract: Introduction: Postprandial hyperglycemia (PPHG) contributes to micro- and macro-vascular complications more than fasting hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Due to the traditional carbohydrate-rich diet, Asians, particularly Indians and Chinese need agents to control the higher risk of uncontrolled PPHG. Targeting PPHG with α-glucosidase inhibitors (AGIs), either alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents and insulin, provide overall glycemic control with transient mild gastrointestinal disorders. Treatment with AGIs, especially acarbose, has also shown to provide beneficial effects on lipid levels, blood pressure, coagulation factors, carotid intima-media thickness and endothelial dysfunction. New insights of acarbose therapy obtained like increased activity of gut hormones and improved gut microbiota may explain the benefits on weight, whereas increased production of H2 may explains its cardiovascular benefits to some extent.Areas covered: A systematic search strate...
