TL;DR: Male team leaders appeared to be at significantly greater risk than female team leaders; they also consumed more alcohol, binged more often, and suffered more consequences than other team members.
Abstract: Alcohol use, binge drinking, and substance abuse-related consequences among students with varying levels of participation in intercollegiate athletics were examined. Between October 1994 and May 1996, 51,483 students at 125 institutions answered questions about their involvement in athletics, ranging from noninvolvement to participant to leadership positions, on the long form of the Core Alcohol and Drug Survey. In comparisons with nonathletes, both male and female athletes consumed significantly more alcohol per week, engaged in binge drinking more often, and suffered more adverse consequences from their substance use. No support was found for the hypothesis that athletic leaders were more responsible than other team participants in using alcohol. Male team leaders appeared to be at significantly greater risk than female team leaders; they also consumed more alcohol, binged more often, and suffered more consequences than other team members.

TL;DR: The SS-B as mentioned in this paper is a measure of five modes of available supportive behavior: emotional support, socializing, practical assistance, financial assistance, and advice/guidance.
Abstract: The SS-B appears to be a promising measure of five modes of available supportive behavior: emotional support, socializing, practical assistance, financial assistance, and advice/guidance. The measure was designed to assess supportive behavior available from family and from friends. For specific purposes the measure might be modified to tap enacted supportive behavior, as was done in Study 4, or might focus on different sources (cf. Tardy, 1985). Further evidence of the divergence of mode-specific scales would be valuable and might be demonstrated by comparing samples with mode-specific deficits, by comparing support received for different problem types (in a more sophisticated fashion than was done here), and by showing differentiated associations between modes of support and various outcome variables. The reliable and valid assessment of specific modes of supportive behavior is an important agenda item in social support research: Such a measure would allow more elaborate theories to be tested, and will undoubtedly prove essential in a complete understanding of social support processes.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a conceptual model of entrepreneurial opportunity production from a constructivist perspective, which assumes that opportunity production proceeds through several stages, including conceptualization of an opportunity idea by an entrepreneur, objectification of that idea, and enactment of the opportunity into a new venture.
Abstract: This article presents a conceptual model of entrepreneurial opportunity production from a constructivist perspective. The model assumes that opportunity production proceeds through several stages, including conceptualization of an opportunity idea by an entrepreneur, objectification of that idea, and enactment of the opportunity into a new venture. However, not all opportunity ideas survive this full process. Between the conceptualization stage and the objectification stage, some ideas are abandoned due to inadequate objectification. Also, between the objectification stage and the enactment stage, some objectified opportunities are abandoned due to insufficient resource support. We identify variables that influence the likelihood that opportunity ideas will be objectified and other variables that influence the likelihood that objectified opportunities will be enacted, and these variables are incorporated into empirically testable propositions. In the discussion section, we describe several boundary conditions for our theory, contrast the theory with objectivist (discovery) theory, and derive implications for future research. TL;DR: The authors reported the results of a study of the effects of rhetorical organization of different types of expository prose on intermediate ESL readers of different native languages, including Spanish, Arabic, and Oriental.
Abstract: Theoretical as well as empirical research within the framework of schema-theoretical approaches to reading has shown reading comprehension to be an interaction between a text and a reader. More specifically, the interaction involves reader background knowledge of text structure and the hierarchical content structure of the text. In her investigations of both adult and adolescent native readers of English, Meyer (1975, 1977a, 1977b, 1979, 1982; Meyer, Brandt, and Bluth 1980; Meyer and Freedle 1984) has found that certain types of rhetorical organization of expository prose are processed and recalled differently from other types. This article reports the results of a study of the effects of rhetorical organization of different types of expository prose on intermediate ESL readers of different native languages. Results indicate that certain more highly structured English rhetorical patterns are more facilitative of recall for non-native readers in general, but there are interesting differences among the native language groups represented in the study: Spanish, Arabic, and Oriental.

TL;DR: The new phototrophs are described as a new species of the genus Chlorobium, Ch chlorobium tepidum, which is positioned phylogenetically within the green sulfur bacterial branch of the domain Bacteria.
Abstract: Thermophilic green sulfur bacteria of the genus Chlorobium were isolated from certain acidic high sulfide New Zealand hot springs. Cells were Gram-negative nonmotile rods of variable length and contained bacteriochlorophyll c and chlorosomes. Cultures of thermophilic chlorobia grew only under anaerobic, phototrophic conditions, either photoautotrophically or photoheterotrophically. The optimum growth temperature for the strains of thermophilic green sulfur bacteria isolated was 47–48°C with generation times of about 2 h being observed. The upper temperature limit for growth was about 52°C. Thiosulfate was a major electron donor for photoautotrophic growth while sulfide alone was only poorly used. N2 fixation was observed at 48°C and cell suspensions readily reduced acetylene to ethylene. The G+C content of DNA from strains of thermophilic chlorobia was 56.5–58.2 mol% and the organisms positioned phylogenetically within the green sulfur bacterial branch of the domain Bacteria. The new phototrophs are described as a new species of the genus Chlorobium, Chlorobium tepidum.
