Abstract: • Heart rate, rate-pressure product, and Vo 2 were measured in ten healthy men during four specified sexual activities: coitus with husband on top, coitus with wife on top, noncoital stimulation of husband by wife, and self-stimulation by husband. Foreplay generated slight, but statistically significant, increases above resting baseline in cardiac and metabolic variables. From stimulation through orgasm, average effort was modest for relatively short spans. Maximum exercise values occurred during the brief spans of orgasm, then returned quickly to near baseline levels. The two noncoital activities required lower expenditures than the two coital positions, with man-on-top coitus rating the highest. Large variations among subjects and among activities discourage use of a general equivalent activity for comparison, such as "two flights of stairs," to represent "sexual activity." Abstract: Sertoli--Sertoli and Sertoli--germ-cell configurational relationships were studied using morphometric techniques and direct measurements as obtained from micrographs used to reconstruct a model of a rat stage V Sertoli cell. Regional areas of the Sertoli cell surface, which faced germ cells, other Sertoli cells, or noncellular structures, were expressed as relative surface area percentages; and the absolute surface areas for these regional areas were calculated. The surface areas of the reconstructed cell, in its unmagnified state, was found to be 12,163 micron2. Cell processes were enumerated and studied using morphometric techniques. The surface area of the reconstructed Sertoli cell facing germ cells and Sertoli cells was also determined. Five Sertoli cells showed extensive contact with the reconstructed cell at the level of the Sertoli--Sertoli junctional contact region. This contact region averaged 3.51 micron in width. The relative and absolute surface area of subsurface ectoplasmic specialization of the Sertoli cell that faced germ cells and other Sertoli cells was calculated, and the extent of penetration of step 17 spermatids into the Sertoli crypts was determined. Surface relationships of the reconstructed cell to cellular and noncellular elements were depicted on outline drawings of the Sertoli cell.

Abstract: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) contributes to the induction of long-term potentiation (LTP) by theta-pattern stimulation, but the specific processes underlying this effect are not known. Experiments described here, using BDNF concentrations that have minor effects on baseline responses, show that the neurotrophin both reduces the threshold for LTP induction and elevates the ceiling on maximal potentiation. The enhanced LTP proved to be as stable and resistant to reversal as that recorded under control conditions. BDNF markedly increased the facilitation of burst responses that occurs within a theta train. This suggests that the neurotrophin acts on long-lasting events that (1) are set in motion by the first burst in a train and (2) regulate the amplitude of subsequent bursts. Whole-cell recordings established that BDNF causes a rapid reduction in the size of the long-lasting afterhyperpolarization (AHP) that follows individual theta bursts. Apamin, an antagonist of type 2 small-conductance Ca2+-activated potassium (SK2) channels, also reduced hippocampal AHPs and closely reproduced the effects of BDNF on theta-burst responses and LTP. The latter results were replicated with a newly introduced, highly selective inhibitor of SK2 channels. Immunoblot analyses indicated that BDNF increases SK2 serine phosphorylation in hippocampal slices. These findings point to the conclusion that BDNF-driven protein kinase cascades serve to depress the SK2 component, and possibly other constituents, of the AHP. It is likely that this mechanism, acting with other factors, promotes the formation and increases the magnitude of LTP.

Abstract: This paper extends previous research by considering three pricing factors for American Depository Receipts (ADRs): the price of the underlying shares in the local currency, the relevant exchange rate, and the US market index. Using both a vector autoregressive (VAR) model with a cointegration constraint and a seemingly-unrelated regression (SUR) approach, we examine the relative importance of, and the speed of adjustment of ADR prices to, these underlying factors. Our results show that while the price of the underlying shares is most important, the exchange rate and the US market also have an impact on ADR prices. While the bulk of the shocks to the pricing factors are reflected in the ADRs within the same calendar day, there are indications that the adjustments are not completed until the following day. Curiously, the ADRs appear to initially overreact to the US market index but underreact to changes in underlying share prices and exchange rates.
