Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new eddy-current testing technique for surface or near-surface defect detection in nonmagnetic metals using giant magnetoresistive (GMR) sensors. It is shown that GMR-based eddy-current probes are able to accurately detect short surface-breaking cracks in conductive materials. The self-rectifying property of the GMR sensor used in this study leads to a simplified signal conditioning circuit, which can be fully integrated on a silicon chip with the GMR sensor. The ability to manufacture probes having small dimensions and high sensitivity (220 mV/mT) to low magnetic fields over a broad frequency range (from dc up to 1 MHz) enhances the spatial resolution of such an eddy-current testing probe. Experimental results obtained by scanning two different probes over a slotted aluminum specimen are presented. General performance characteristics are demonstrated by measurements of surface and subsurface defects of different sizes and geometries. Dependence of the sensor output on orientation, liftoff distance, and excitation intensity is also investigated.

Abstract: Systematic reviews were conducted in the nineties and early 2000's on online learning research. However, there is no review examining the broader aspect of research themes in online learning in the last decade. This systematic review addresses this gap by examining 619 research articles on online learning published in twelve journals in the last decade. These studies were examined for publication trends and patterns, research themes, research methods, and research settings and compared with the research themes from the previous decades. While there has been a slight decrease in the number of studies on online learning in 2015 and 2016, it has then continued to increase in 2017 and 2018. The majority of the studies were quantitative in nature and were examined in higher education. Online learning research was categorized into twelve themes and a framework across learner, course and instructor, and organizational levels was developed. Online learner characteristics and online engagement were examined in a high number of studies and were consistent with three of the prior systematic reviews. However, there is still a need for more research on organization level topics such as leadership, policy, and management and access, culture, equity, inclusion, and ethics and also on online instructor characteristics.

Abstract: Teams that span multiple geographic, temporal, and cultural boundaries have become prevalent in many industries and sectors. Researchers from multiple disciplines have begun to examine these multinational, multicultural (MNMC) distributed teams. The purpose of this article is to provide a review and critique of existing research in this area. To this end, the authors examine the ways scholars have conceptualized culture in this research, discuss the role that distribution is found to play in these teams, and provide a research agenda. The authors argue that scholars should continue to complicate their views of culture and embrace nuanced views of distribution to reflect the complexities of MNMC distributed team characteristics and processes.

Abstract: The Comprehensive Soldier Fitness program, currently under development for the U.S. Army, will include a component designed to increase the possibilities for posttraumatic growth in the aftermath of combat. In this article, we briefly review studies that provide evidence for this phenomenon in combat veterans, and we suggest elements that such a program might include to facilitate posttraumatic growth. We urge the Army to conduct randomized controlled trials testing the efficacy of the program prior to its implementation.
