Lung cancer and arsenic concentrations in drinking water in Chile.

TL;DR: Strong evidence is provided that ingestion of inorganic arsenic is associated with human lung cancer in northern Chile in a case-control study involving patients diagnosed with lung cancer between 1994 and 1996 and frequency-matched hospital controls.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mutagenicity of arsenic in mammalian cells: role of reactive oxygen species

TL;DR: It is shown that arsenite is in fact a strong dose-dependent mutagen and that it induces mostly large deletion mutations, and Cotreatment of cells with the oxygen radical scavenger dimethyl sulfoxide significantly reduces the mutagenicity of arsenite.
Journal ArticleDOI

Tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, and cancer of the oral cavity and oropharynx among U.S. veterans.

TL;DR: This work has shown that independent carcinogenic effects of alcohol drinking and tobacco smoking as well as their interaction can be usefully studied in a population of heavy drinkers and smokers.
Journal Article

The Comet Assay as a Rapid Test in Biomonitoring Occupational Exposure to DNA-damaging Agents and Effect of Confounding Factors

TL;DR: It is argued that none of the confounding factors are unequivocally positive in the majority of the studies and recommended that age, gender, and smoking status be used as criteria for the selection of populations and that data on exercise, diet, and recent infections be registered before blood sampling.
Journal ArticleDOI

Aldehyde Dehydrogenases and Their Role in Carcinogenesis

TL;DR: This work suggests that modulation of ALDH activity may an important determinant of the effectiveness of certain chemotherapeutic agents and what is currently known about the general structural and functional properties of the enzymes and the interrelationships of the various forms.
